I've never followed the series, only caught an episode or two while babysitting my nephew a few years ago, but never thought much of it to follow it. However I've been told by many that I really should, and with the series finished, I've been thinking of giving it a chance. What makes it so good? And should I give it a shot?

Should you give it a shot? Absolutely.
What makes it good? It's a well-written show that manages to balance action and comedy and it has likable characters with depth that actually go through character development as the show goes on.

Hell yes. I personally think it's the best Nicktoon ever.

A great place to start would be the M. Night Shyamalan live action movie.
NO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T DO THAT.

Without hyperbole, I consider the movie to be the worst adaptation of an existing property ever. When you finish the show, do go and watch the movie. Your mind will break at how badly it was botched.

I had thought my days of being attracted to animated characters where done. But I have to admit-that Korra had one kicking set of curves.

I would recommend sticking a Korra marathon on top of any Avatar binge. Korra gets frustrating for around half a series in Book 2, but is very much a worthy successor/companion to the Last Airbender canon.

I'm guessing considerably after April 2016, given that's when Aang's next comic is due release.

Yeah, the show is fantastic, and Korra is great, too. Can't go wrong.

The first season is a bit slow to start, once season 2 hits it gets really good and becomes one of the best modern cartoons ever.

Personally, I even felt it was one of the better TV shows of recent vintage, period. Bear in mind that I'm not knocking the multitude of great, wonderfully produced/directed/acted shows that have appeared on HBO, AMC, or what have you, but ever since The Wire and The Sopranos (two shows I think were amazing, by and large) I've gotten kind of tired of shows basically playing up the "the world is relentlessly awful" trope and making a viewing game out of "so, who might die THIS week?" I know that's a gross oversimplification, but after awhile my brain started to tune a lot of shows out over that feeling.
The Avatar series doesn't shy away from showing that things can get bad; really bad. But the sense of optimism that underlies it is really refreshing in this era of media, and the emotional attachment I, a grown-ass man, developed for it really surprised me.

So I finished the first season, and man, for a Nicktoon, it's a very impressive show. It knows where it's going and doesn't get lost in its own plot. The main characters are very likable, especially Aang, who doesn't suffer from the goody two-shoes formula of most protagonists. Even Zuko has a good reason for being an anti-hero, and isn't angsty just because.
I really like the balance of action and humor; it doesn't overwhelm you with fight after fight, and it doesn't try to force jokes; the timing for it just right, leaving plenty of room for story progression and character development. While it hasn't completely wowed me yet, I'm really digging it so far.
And shit, that "Face Stealer" is one creepy motherf***er.
