One of the greatest covers of all time.
I still remember the first Eddie Guerrero tribute video WWE did was to this song...

It's rare that a cover improves upon a song, but Johnny Cash's cover definitely did. Cash took what was a really good song to begin with and made it an extension of his soul and poured it out into the universe. Just a true piece of Americana art.

I love it, but f***, it always kills me. Like, when I'm cooking, I tend to like to have Johnny Cash on shuffle on my iPod (Dunno why, just works), and it always comes on and makes me want to curl on up the floor and just be sad.
f***ing amazing song though.

I was never a fan of Eddie Guerrero, but damn that video package made me cry like he was my idol. Still chokes me up thinking about it.
This is also a hard song for me to listen to because of the passing of my Grandma. It just makes me think of her and how she went. Very powerful song.

Seriously I love Johnny Cash's music a lot. Dude wrote a lot of powerful songs, songs can people relate too, he can make you laugh and cry within a span of the next track, and overall seemed like a really cool intelligent guy who was a rockstar in every sense of the word. This isn't a knock against country music but one of the big reasons why I got hooked on Johnny Cash because he and his music was different than any other country music or artist I ever heard from before. Like he sang about different topics you normally didn't hear in country or didn't sing about usual subjects you hear in most country music and in his later songs he expanded the scope of his songs giving it a sense of scale you never hear from the genre.
Like this is a serious request but is there other country artists similar to Cash you can recommend?

I think I'm the only person in the world who prefers the NIN version better. I don't hate the cash version just prefer NIN better.

I'll always associate this song with Artie Lange. There's a video of him on youtube that's really sad like it features his downward spiral.

The Johnny Cash version of this song is absolutely fantastic. The murmurs of pain and dawning in his voice are so powerful and profound.
The Nine Inch Noise version just sounds like typical angsty screamo emo tripe. They're so SO lucky to have had a fan like Cash.

I would suggest some Red Sovine, here are a few songs: Teddy Bear Phantom 309 Gear Jammer and the Hobo: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoHQrXpffSEI Didn't Jump the Fence: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNqoJL5saLIAnd now for 2 songs in my head Chuck Wells - Down and Out. The Statler Brothers www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC8diX4jV5o

The NIN version was perfect in the finale of Rick & Morty season 2. Just the raw bitterness of the NIN version worked rather than Cash's quiet remorseful take on the song.

I will always prefer the Nine Inch Nails one personally.
and not just because of Rick and Morty.
That's how I have always felt.

one of the best covers I've ever heard, though I do prefer the NIN version. tonally they're completely different though. Johnny Cash's is this beautiful remorseful song from an old man who knows his time is short, NIN's version is a lot more raw and about someone whose totally given up on life.
