Can't find the exact link to this rumour/newz that I saw on Facebook, but apparently Ryback is trying to trademark "The Big Guy", which means that WWE owns the name "Ryback" but not "The Big Guy."
Probably doesn't mean anything, but it could look like Ryback is perhaps looking at life outside WWE..?

It might be, or hoping they'd license it through him for merch and he'd get a payday off of that.

It must be something Ryback came up with himself. Do WWE get to trademark something if it's on their show but it's something you made up?

It must be something Ryback came up with himself. Do WWE get to trademark something if it's on their show but it's something you made up? That's usually what ends up happening. I also think that if Ryback does successfully trademark 'The Big Guy' there will be an immediate lack of the use of 'The Big Guy' moniker on WWE TV.

Even the Web can be right sometimes! Ryback has filed three trademark applications for "The Big Guy" or some variation thereof.
Word Mark THE BIG GUY Goods and Services IC 041. US 100 101 107. G & S: Conducting entertainment exhibitions in the nature of performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer; Entertainment information; Entertainment services, namely, personal appearances by a sports celebrity. FIRST USE: 20140100. FIRST USE IN COMMERCE: 20140100 Standard Characters Claimed Mark Drawing Code (4) STANDARD CHARACTER MARK Serial Number 86803512 Filing Date October 29, 2015 Current Basis 1A Original Filing Basis 1A Owner (APPLICANT) Reeves, Ryan INDIVIDUAL UNITED STATES Attorney of Record Mark Borghese Type of Mark SERVICE MARK Register PRINCIPAL Other Data The name(s), portrait(s), and/or signature(s) shown in the mark identifies Ryan Reeves, whose consent(s) to register is made of record. Live/Dead Indicator LIVE
Word Mark THE BIG GUY Goods and Services IC 025. US 022 039. G & S: Clothing, namely, t-shirts, hats, athletic pants, baby bibs and wristbands Standard Characters Claimed Mark Drawing Code (4) STANDARD CHARACTER MARK Serial Number 86687732 Filing Date July 9, 2015 Current Basis 1B Original Filing Basis 1B Owner (APPLICANT) Reeves, Ryan INDIVIDUAL UNITED STATES Type of Mark TRADEMARK Register PRINCIPAL Live/Dead Indicator LIVE
Word Mark FEED ME MORE, THE BIG GUY Goods and Services IC 025. US 022 039. G & S: Baby bibs not of paper; Clothing for babies, toddlers and children, treated with fire and heat retardants, namely, pajamas, jackets, shirts, pants, jumpers; Hats; Shirts IC 028. US 022 023 038 050. G & S: Weight lifting belts Standard Characters Claimed Mark Drawing Code (4) STANDARD CHARACTER MARK Serial Number 86562492 Filing Date March 12, 2015 Current Basis 1B Original Filing Basis 1B Owner (APPLICANT) Reeves, Ryan INDIVIDUAL UNITED STATES Prior Registrations 8656249 Type of Mark TRADEMARK Register PRINCIPAL Live/Dead Indicator LIVE
As of now, the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) is refusing his application on the last two trademarks related to merchandise. But surprisingly, the refusal has nothing to do with WWE! Instead, the office is citing likelihood of confusion (among other reasons) because apparently "BIG GUY" is already in use by other companies. Ryback can appeal the decision if he wants.

Well of course they rejected that, that's even more of a generic thing than when the NFL thought they could trademark "the big game"

I remember in 2005, there was an issue with someone else trademarking "Captain Charisma" so they had to stop selling those shirts. Come to find out, Christian is the one who had done it. He also trademarked his logo, so both WWE games that came out that year featured Christian with blank tights.

That would explain why he was allowed to use that logo when he jumped over to TNA (and I'm almost positive he called himself Captain Charisma as well) but I guess I never really thought about it that hard.

Interesting because I believe WWE has it built in to their contracts that the nicknames, etc. that you create while under contract to them that they put on TV become WWE's intellectual property.

"The Big Guy" Ryan Reeves is a pretty good indie name.

I'm like 99% sure Ryback was Ryback before WWE, no? I thought he came up with the name before he got resigned...

"The Big Guy" Ryan Reeves is a pretty good indie name. He wrestled as Ryback prior to joining WWE, he might be able to use it if he didn't sign it over completely.
