I wish they could sue people on the Internet as well. Good for them. I hope they break the bank. They probably won't even win because to win a defamation suit as a public figure, you need to prove actual malice, which means that you need to prove that the statement that was made was not an honest mistake and was in fact published with the actual intent to harm the public figure. And according to the Supreme Court, actual malice only occurs when the person making the statement knew the statement was not true at the time he or she made it, or had reckless disregard for whether it was true or not. Given how stridently Al Jazeera and Deborah Davies have defended their reporting and their sourcing, and given how she seems to not care about who these big-name American athletes are, it will be virtually impossible for Ryan Howard, Ryan Zimmerman, or Peyton Manning to prove that Al Jazeera or Davies published the report knowing its information was false and knowing it would irrevocably harm their reputations. Filing a lawsuit is a pretty easy way to pound your chest about something being false, whether it is or not. These guys have literally nothing to lose by filing lawsuits, while it does wonders for their image.

You'll probably want to read this: variety.com/2016/tv/columns/al-jazeera-america-shuts-down-analysis-1201679228/There were a number of factors that doomed Al Jazeera America from the outset, the least of which was the fact that they published a story that cast a shadow on America's golden child. And even though their America channel is being shuttered, don't expect Al Jazeera or Deborah Davies to back down from their reporting. They've stood strong on it from the moment it was published, they're not about to lay down because a few athletes have filed a virtually unwinnable lawsuit. But now, a joke. It's good for Peyton Manning that Al Jazeera America is closing its doors. This is basically the first time ever that Manning has accomplished something in a tight situation.

Remember a few weeks ago when Charlie Sly basically recanted the entire report before it was even aired? Well I think it's pretty safe to say why he was in such a hurry to sing a different tune. This is exceptionally sleazy and outright criminal what these hired goons did. Does Peyton Manning realize how bad this looks? He's sitting there at these press conferences with that smug smile on his face about how he knows the report is junk and how an NFL investigation will find nothing, but he knows that all to be true because he's got a bunch of heavies on retainer who will intimidate, coerce, and threaten anyone who claims to have any knowledge of the HGH scandal. Sending the goon squad to a witness' parents' home, pretending to be law enforcement officers, and intimidating them in the middle of the night is outright despicable and quite illegal. The cover-up is always worse than the lie and Peyton Manning is finding that out right now.

Maybe it's just the Gator in me coming out, but...can we just say "sending PI's to someone's house to commit criminal acts (impersonating a police officer) is just a tad bit worse than fudging the inflation rate of a football"?

Everyone who blasted Tom Brady and criticized him for destroying his cellphone should be excoriating Peyton Manning right now because the act he may or may not have been complicit in is actually illegal. And just like the people who said that Brady should have just taken his medicine and admitted guilt last winter, I say the same thing about Manning now. If he simply said, "In order to return to the field after several neck surgeries in 2011 and 2012, I used a substance that I shouldn't have. I have not used the substance since and I sincerely apologize for what I did," it's gone and forgotten about. Hell, people probably sympathize with him because he was doing whatever it took to return to the field because of his love of the game. But now? The way things are trending, he may become football's Lance Armstrong. A legend who is smiling and denying and aw shucks-ing in front of the cameras but aware of witness intimidation, threats, and coercion behind the scenes.

Thign is, this is different, big time, from a legal perspective. One is cheating at football, regardless of how many people do it. It's scuffing baseballs. The other is being complicit in both possibly people falsely portraying themselves as police officers (a felony) and either falsifying prescriptions or participating in the interstate medical fraud (if he took the HGH that was delivered in his wife's name) also a felony. One is cheating, one is criminal.

Of course, ESPN and major media types want nothing to do with this story. Neither does the league. I'm not Cam Newton fan, I'm convinced he and his dad took money as an amature, but...three's "college football scandal" and then there's potential criminal behavior from the "good and honest man who is the face of football" which...frankly that's just worse on so many levels I see them just pushing this aside until after the game, letting Peyton "ride off into the sunset with the ring that validates his career just like Elway did" (and make no mistake, that's the storyline), and then later, the chips can fall.

All Peyton has to do is retire after today, make some more goofy commercials, and no one will even remember in a few months.

Manning and Denver fans are of course also going to be silent on this. Well if we are gonna go all moral high ground on this one, hey at least he wasn't involved in a murder while an active player now was he. Should we lambaste Panthers and Patriots fans for that and call them out too? Seriously though, did anyone actually read the entire article and how sly's lawyer was on speakerphone while the investigators talked to him at the family house and how everything was cordial and the Sly family told the cops that everything was fine? Or are we just going to read the headlines and believe what we want nowadays?

Oh and on those players in murder investigations, they were cut almost immediately when it seemed like they really did it. I'm not taking the moral high ground on anyone, I am however going to ask what the point was in Peyton doing this as in doing this, he gave the investigation more legs.

You called out a fanbase in my original quoted post. Wasn't even going to comment before that cause this whole thing is damn silly. Now his lawyers sent 2 PI's to investigate the person making the claims against him. If one of them impersonated a cop to try to get them to talk that's on the PI. What they were there to do was investigate this guy and his claims that he made. As I said before there was no gestapo bullshit going on here. Cops showed up and in the police transcript it shows that everything was fine when they arrived. When they spoke to Charlie Sly the next day they did so with the input of his lawyer on speakerphone. Other than the one PI saying he was a cop, which again is on the PI not Manning nor anyone else, where is all of this illegal lets start handing out arrest warrent crap I've been reading on this page? This all happened before the story even leaked out so how did he give this investigation more legs. He is perfectly within his rights to look into someone making the claims against him and his family, no?

Never also used the word gestapo, I went more mafia as it seemed like intimidation, what with the one PI lying about being a cop while both PIs are in BLACK overcoats and jeans. Whatever way you want to put it, this was sleazy as hell. And why would the investigation have more legs, you ask? Because this adds plenty of smoke, more than enough smoke to think maybe there is a bit of a fire. There is a reason Peyton has refused to sue, because then he would have to explain what was in the package that was sent in his wife's name to his Florida home. If there was no fire, as soon as Peyton gets the call about someone said he took HGH, he should have threatened to sue Al Jazeera of they release the story. Case closed. And as far as calling people out, I merely think it is interesting because when Deflategate came out, Patriots fans here immediately came out to respond to this. Denver and Manning fans (more so, Manning fans), they don't come out and respond to this immediately as it takes more than 24 hours for them here to respond...which with you being the only one, is still interesting.

When referring to warrants, if you see I said on the page about them being referenced, not you specifically. Why should he threaten to sue anyone as no one in the media nor Al Jazeera has accused him of taking HGH yet have they. They have specifically said they aren't accusing him of taking it so how can he sue. Concerning why no one responded, hell I don't know? Better things to do? Really only 2 really active Broncos posters around counting myself. Honestly like I said I wasn't even gonna respond until you said something, cause to me this whole story about the PI's is a non story to me after I read the article. Me, I was at a gathering last night, and getting ready to head to one now. To add, I know I've said this before but I'm no great Manning fan. Called him nothing more than a hired gun on multiple occasions and I still think the wrong QB is in the game today. That being said, reason most aren't responding to this thread other than a few...most just don't give a shit.
