E-cigarette advertisements are responsible for millions of U.S. children and teens using the nicotine-delivering devices, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“The same advertising tactics the tobacco industry used years ago to get kids addicted to nicotine are now being used to entice a new generation of young people to use e-cigarettes,” CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden said during a phone call with press today (Jan. 5).
Teen use of e-cigarettes tripled from 2013 to 2014. During the same time period, advertising dollars spent on e-cigarette advertising nearly doubled.
Youth e-cigarette use has increased drastically in the past several years. Between 2011 and 2013, the number of middle and high school students using e-cigs tripled, according to government surveys. More recently, the popularity of e-cigarettes among teenagers has skyrocketed. According to the National Youth Tobacco Survey, the proportion of high school students using e-cigarettes increased threefold between 2013 and 2014 alone.
During the same time period, advertising for e-cigarettes has boomed. In 2011, advertisers spent $6.4 million on e-cig advertisements in newspapers, magazines, television, and online, the American Journal of Preventive Medicine concluded. By 2013, that figure topped $60 million, according to AdAge. And in 2014, according to a CDC statement, advertisers spent $115 million promoting e-cigs.
“Kids should not be using e-cigarettes and yet two-thirds of kids in this country are seeing e-cigarette ads,” Frieden says, referring to a data analysis that found 68.9 percent of middle and high school students have been exposed to e-cigarette advertising.
Millions of children and teens see e-cigarette ads from various sources, government survey data shows. Two million high school students and 450,000 middle school students used e-cigarettes in the past month, according to government data from a 2014 survey. In fact, teens are now more likely to use e-cigarettes than they are to smoke conventional cigarettes, the data shows.
I don't get it. Maybe someone can tell me how they are targeting teens because I really don't know. Are they advertising in comic books?
Back in the day, they stopped using Joe Camel because they argued that since he and his friends were cartoon drawings, it attracted kids.
What are they doing now to attract kids?

Only thing I can think of are stuff like the candy flavored cigs.
But I don't pay attention to ads so I can't say.

I've never seen an E-Cig ad... How old are you? Maybe only kids can see them, like some storyline I can't think of at the moment

I've never seen an E-Cig ad... Really? Jesus there was a period I couldn't watch TV without seeing 2 or 3 every break. They did ban TV ads recently if memory serves but all the gas stations around here are plastered in the ads.

I dunno, I guess I've seen posters on a 711 window or whatever, but I didn't really consider that in terms of the topic. Blaming kids buying E-cigs on posters inside of 711 seems so, bleh. I don't mean to sound like a snob, but falling for tobacco/e-cig ads is pretty dumb regardless of age.

Yeah, there were tons of them on TV at one point. the most notable one I remember was Blu with Jenny McCarthy because my sister would curse her out every single time... Hell now I can't go to my damn office without seeing 3 of them on the elevator screen, not to mention any that might be on the subway. (Despite the fact that they are basically illegal in New York City...) There's an e-cig kiosk at the mall, and the guy running it askedif I was interested in starting smoking... I remember an E-cig guy try to get me to quit smoking ... he basically stood in front of me and asked me how many ciggarettes I smoked a day... when I told him none he didn't know what to say to that.

That is just it, these ads were usually using celebs in clubs, vaping fruit flavors which appeals to teens. It does seem stupid when you get past that age but that is meant to target those ages. At one point they didn't even have the age restriction, it was up to the companies or retailers to decide whether or not to sell to kids and the scummy ones had no problem doing it.

It's sort of the same way that Starbucks advertises to teens. Younger people are less likely to like a cup of coffee, but if you make one that tastes like birthday cake, you can get them to buy.

I've never seen a TV ad, but there are tons of radio ads. One of them refers to "your skill level," which totally confuses me.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Teen smoking has always been the industry's bread and butter so the idea of them marketing e-cigs towards them seems par for the course.
It reminds me of all the "hard lemonade" type drinks. CLEARLY aimed at getting young drinkers, but they tried to pretend like it wasn't.
Heck, when I was 16 (this was early on in the "hard lemonade" surge) my dad accidentally bought me a Mike's when were at a stadium. He had no clue it was alcoholic - he just thought it was a lemonade. I got halfway through the bottle before I realized it wasn't regular lemonade because I was so thirsty and guzzled most of it. At first I was like, "Geez, this lemonade tastes kinda bitter and sour..."

No matter how it is marketed, it's one of the more obnoxious hobbies. Frikkin Dragons. "It's not illegal yet, so watch me bellow mortals! WITNESS ME!"
