So, I was just listening to Do it's podcast with Abyss and they were discussing how nice of a guy AJ Styles is and it got me thinking. We hear the Triple H stories or about how Cena held down Nexus but does this happen on the indys where top guys try to keep their spots? I know the structure is way different but I'm curious because I don't hear these stories come out about Indy guys.

I think a big part of it is that, yeah, the structure is so different from how a WWE or TNA operates. If a guy's being a real, big leaguer prick in one indy fed, it's not super hard for a guy to pick up stakes and find a booking somewhere fairly nearby. One asshole can't get booked everywhere.

There is a video on Youtube of it, but some promoter brought in Buff Bagwell just to beat him. Other promoters who never made it, do this all the time. Bring in a former WCW/WWE guy and just beat them.

There's plenty of it out there, all the way down to the smallest promotions. Some workers want to be big fish in small ponds, or protect their gimmick, or have to look strong to keep getting other bookings and do whatever they can to accomplish it. Not all, but some.

I always wondered, was Douglas ever overly protective of his spot in ECW? He was the only real constant in the main event scene there over the company's main run from 94 to the TNN days. Or was it just a case of Heyman wanting a long term heel champ ala NWA? No other wrestler had as much success in the World Championship scene.

I think a big part of that was that Douglas was likely considered "raid proof" by Heyman, as he had a burned bridge to the WWF, and bad blood with crucial people in WCW, it was safe to make him the top guy, because the likelihood of him getting another shot in either of the big two was remote. Which of course wound up as a failed plot in 1999, but there you are.

Our local indy promotion (That has since went out of business. Shocker.) used to book big names to come in all the time so they're shitty top guy could beat them.
Jake Roberts and Buff Bagwell are the two 'victims' that initially come to mind.

Low Ki was pretty much this for a time on the indies. Why his bookings dried up in the mid-2000's for a decent stretch of time after he had seemingly been everywhere for so long.

Yeah Ki was pretty difficult to work with. When Justice Pain was the top guy in CZW people hated coming in and working with him.

The latter of which usually do the carrying...one infamous match had Matt Hardy bumping all around a latter for him.

It makes sense for companies to bring in name draw talent to put over their own regular talent. That's just smart business, it draws a bigger crowd and makes their guy seem more credible. That's a totally different thing than what I think OP is getting at.

That's a totally different thing than what I think OP is getting at. Yes and no. I think the level of it now is different than it was during the territory years, when it was sort of expected for the guys just passing through to put the local guys over. It's more wish-fulfillment now. That said, still not quite "burying" talent the way the OP likely was looking for.

He usually builds a program with someone losing to them then finally beats them in Wildkat. Plus his match with Matt Hardy was one of the best Hawx had had since he faced Jerry Lynn in his final match in LA.

A former indy wrestler on a different forum actually said that Abyss "big leagued" all the guys in the locker room.
Apparently Rhyno is just a total class act though.
