I don't mean to replace something you broke, or if you're a collector and want to keep one thing in its packaging.
Well here's the example-a woman on FB, stated she was about to buy a re release of a set of CDs she already has, which I'm estimating she's had the others for 20 years(trust me I know, it's Monkees related and I have the same set)
But she's going to buy them AGAIN, because the price is cheap and she'll play them and I guess preserve the other ones she had for 20 years.
I also noticed a couple of others that say they will purchase this because it's a "good deal" despite already owning everything
$50 is $50 and I'm holding onto mine.
Wth is the logic in this and have you ever done it for whatever reason and why?

I only usually buy something I already have if it comes with something I don't have.
For instance, I bought the NBA Legends DVD set even though I already had the Ultimate Jordan DVD set. But it included the Larry Bird and Magic Johnson DVDs and it was only 5 dollars. No way was I gonna pass that up.

I have a large amount of duplicate wrestling figures, mostly because the build a figure you need all the parts or the two packs had a figure that was only released once. Like I have a decent amount of Orton figures just because he was frequent in the build a figure series

People buying something because it's a good deal are probably doing it to resell it on eBay.

I actually bought Final Fantasy 7 on steam despite still having the PS1 game.
My older game is well old ( I bought it in 99) and cd 1 is badly scratched. I actually have to load cd 2 and swap it over to one to play the game. So since I figured it was on borrowed time and the steam version was cheap. Well why not.

My mum owns three Simon and Garfunkel greatest hits compilations. She had one on tape, bought another on cd, then realised it wasn't the same as the tape so bought another one.

I do it if it's an upgrade
- Better Picture & Sound - Better Features - Good Mods (When I buy PC versions of Console Games) - Less pissing about (Final Fantasy X & X-2 HD)

Some of the time I will do that with music, if I got the album through other means, like ripping a CD, and then I want to get the physical copy.
As for anything else, I have bought trade paperbacks of comics if I had the individual copies, with plans to donate or sell the individual copies. Also, I remember buying Wrestlemania 23 on DVD, which was the 3-disc edition, and later buying the Blockbuster Exclusive edition, which had 2-discs, but the second disc had replaced the extras with exclusive content. This is not the bare-bones 2-disc version, by the way.

I only do it accidentally now. But I got such a big collection of books, dvds, blu rays, comic books and pez that it does happen. I am tempted to get an old palm pilot and put a list of what I got on it. Just to prevent this. And yes I know if I had a smartphone I could put a list on it. Don't want a smartphone cause I refuse to pay more than 25 bucks a month for something I rarely use.

That sunds like someone is hoping it appreciates in value, and they'll be disappointed.
I understand rebuying an old gae on a newer platform like steam, because it can be a pain to get old media to work, especially in the CD era, or just to avoid having to change over consoles.

I've bought remasters of U2 albums I'd already owned. It's not really that unusual.

I've got four sets of the first six Gamera movies...
First set was ordered through my local excuse-for-a-comic shop. It took months to come in. So long that I forgot I ordered it, so when I saw it on the shelf at WalMart for $10 I bought it. The week after that happened, the same set I ordered came in, with a $15 price tag. I knew that they'd never sell it if WM had it cheaper, plus they wouldn't have it if it wasn't for me... so out of guilt I bought it as well, figuring I could gift it to someone. Two months later, my sister bought me the same set for Christmas. Didn't have the heart to tell her I already had it. A year later, WalMart (again) had the complete 11-movie Gamera set for $15, so I had to get it to see the final five movies.
And the last three movies from the 90's are actually damn good, so if you find the 11-movie set for cheap, get it.

I literally don't buy anything I don't need. I prefer lots of space in my home instead of stuff. I couldn't fathom spending money on something I already have.

I was in goodwill the other month and there was a Sega Genesis, no wire for only 3 bucks, same exact model as the one I have (Model 1). Works too, so I figured if for some reason my sega genesis ever craps out for whatever reason I have another one!

If it's a limited release then sometimes it's best to buy them despite being unsure rather than having to pay the ebay prices if you change your mind at a later date.
On the flip side if you change your mind at least you can sell them. Well in theory anyway as I never actually end up doing that, I guess that's just how I justify it.
I tend to only do it for videogames though as there's usually some advantage to a re-release. It can also be good to buy back-up hardware when they're in clearance sales (love my £30 Gameboy Micro).

I have some real old possibly bootleg (though I bought them from an actual store back in 2002) Cowboy Bebop DVDs.
Recently I put the new Blu Rays of the show on my wishlist and got it for Xmas, so technically I have 2 copies of the same show.
I haven't watched the blurays yet, but I'm hoping there's a vast improvement in quality.

I bought 'Skyrim' three times because for some reason I thought I had rented it instead of bought it previously. I bought it once for my Xbox 360 (which I sold), once for my PS3 (that I thought I rented) then again for the PS3.
Imagine my surprise when I found the other PS3 copy while cleaning my house.

Twice, once when I lost my copy of LittleBigPlanet 2 and ended up buying a new copy because I love that game, and twice when I sold Mortal Kombat 9 and later saw it on sale on PSN.
Lately though, I'm pretty strict on spending so if it's a form of media, I'll end up just renting it or not bothering at all if it's something else.
