Why do Weezer sometimes get lumped into the pop-punk scene? I happen to be a fan and i dont think i've heard anything of theirs that could even remotely be considered punk, let alone pop-punk. Power-pop, definitely, but i dont hear even a minor punk influence on them, i consider them more of a modern day cheap trick or cars (of course, you could lump a lot of so called pop-punk bands in the power-pop category as well to be honest).

Because Weezer (the Blue Album) came out shortly after Dookie and it had that kind of poppy feel so it got lumped together. I'd say that in terms of pop punk Rivers Cuomo shared some song writing similarities with Paul Westerberg. So I think there is a link there.

Because they have to go somewhere and don't fit anywhere.

Because labels like that have limitations and there becomes a point when there's so many labels that they're all meaningless.

Whenever magazines or websites do their "Top 50 Punk Albums of All Time" lists, they throw a Weezer album and a Public Enemy on there with the qualifier it's a "punk rock statement" or something.

It's because Rivers Cuomo dressed like a punk rocker in the music video to "Go Away."
(Just kidding.)
I think the people who labeled the band 'pop-punk' got that label mixed up with 'power pop.' Both labels have short words that start with the letter 'p.'

Even if they are pop punk, so what? I like plenty of pop punk songs. Just enjoy what you enjoy.

Listen to "If You're Wondering if I Want You Too" and tell me that doesn't sound the slightest bit pop punk

If you have to label Weezer, I'd term it "Dork Rock." Pop Punk sounds stupid.

Weezer is one of those bands I never understood how they became so popular. As far as Pop Punk, their early stuff does remind me of Husker Du and early Go Gos stuff. So I can see why they might get the pop punk label. But to me pop punk is Green Day and tripe like Blink 182 and Sum 41.

What I don't understand is why "pop punk" has to be considered such a negative term.
I'm sorry, but Blink 182 and Bowling For Soup are f***ing great. No shame in lumping Weezer among those groups.

I think there's a sentiment among some people that it's not kosher for any form of rock to have a pop sensibility to it, which is utter horseshit.

I never really thought of Weezer being punk. They're alt rock/power pop.

Part of it is punk rock started out to be the anti-pop music. So a pop punk band is kind of going against the original ideals. Never considered Bowling for Soup as any kind of punk. But then I really don't consider Blink as a punk band either. They are pop rock bands.
