First off, I'll admit I'm not the biggest Pokémon fan out there. Could only possibly name a handful out of the ones past the original 151, and even those first ones I know a few, not all.
But since it's an anniversary year for them, and I was rearranging my amiibo, one of which was Pikachu, I figured why not pose this question.
We all know that Pikachu ended up being pretty much THE mascot for the Pokémon series, despite never really having a big role inside the main series games (save for Yellow but that was just a modified port of Red/Green/Blue). Mostly because of his appearance in the anime.
But let's say you were working in making things at the time...would you have still gone with Pikachu, or would you have picked another creature out of the first gen to be the mascot of the series?
What little I know of Pokémon via playing the first gen games was that Pikachu did work because 1)it was cute and 2)it couldn't really evolve except with a special stone, so it didn't have to change over time (not that that's stopped Ash either, but whatever).
But still...Poké-fans, who would you have picked?

I'll go with Lapras 1. It serves a role in the game as a ferry. 2. It's near extinction so not too many of them about. 3. Given as a gift in red/blue 4. It can talk to humans via telepathy. 5. It's adorable but powerful so has mascot charm 6. Ice Pokemon were few and far between in the original 151 7. It's a giant dinosaur based off Nessie. 8. It's awful in a fight with Pikachu 9. It has no other evolutions 10. Ash using it instead of a Pikachu would be funny

Of Gen 1, probably Eevee since it has the most unique evolutionary line.

Honestly, they pretty much nailed it with Pikachu intentionally or not. In a sense the fact that he was just another Mon in-game for Pokemon RBG really helped sell the idea that there were that many unique Pokemon out there to interact with, as well as the freedom of picking your team.

Pikachu is the best possible mascot they could have picked.
His design is simple, bright and cute, thus he's perfect to market. Plus his black eyes give him a teddy bear like appearance, so kids would naturally want him as a toy in any form.
And his small size makes him easy to write in an underdog position. You can't do that with Charizard, Lucario (even though he's my personal favorite) or the other more "badass" Pokémon.

Well the original idea was for the mascot to be Clefairy.
Which... I don't know how well that would've worked out. I think the series would still have been popular since it would've still been the very same game at its core. And most likely something else would have eventually superseded Clefairy as the mascot anyway.
That would've been interesting though to see, I admit.

Goes along with a character that at one point (at least in Japan) was a secondary mascot:

Pikachu's probably the best choice, but as a kid I likely would've gone with Squirtle or Mewtwo given those were basically my favorites and are still way up there for me now.

Vulpix or Growlithe would have worked I think, but whichever one you'd choose would need a different type. I don't think such a mascot should share type with the starters, and I think have a fire dog and fire fox is sorta redundant.

Pikachu is probably the best choice, but if it had to be anyone other than Pikachu, I probably would have gone with Jigglypuff. Cute, round, easy to draw, and was a great character in the early part of the anime. Plus it kinda looked like Kirby, so bonus.

I second Eevee. It was always my personal favorite go-to mascot, not to mention all it's different evolution lines.
I could have definitely seen Eevee as Ash's starter Pokemon instead of Pikachu in the anime. But I'm glad Gary got one and it had that cool battle with Ash's Pikachu.

Charmander was always my favourite, so him. Plus he turns into a dragon. Pikachu just turns into a fatter version of himself.
Interesting sidenote...apparently autocorrect detects Pikachu as "spinach".
