Charmander was always my favourite, so him. Plus he turns into a dragon. Pikachu just turns into a fatter version of himself. Interesting sidenote...apparently autocorrect detects Pikachu as "spinach". THAT explains why Ash's Pikachu is so dangerous...it's the Poke-verse version of Popeye!

Squirtle. The best starter, cute as a button, cool as f**k, rocks sunglasses like no one else.

Well the original idea was for the mascot to be Clefairy. Which... I don't know how well that would've worked out. I think the series would still have been popular since it would've still been the very same game at its core. And most likely something else would have eventually superseded Clefairy as the mascot anyway. That would've been interesting though to see, I admit. Goes along with a character that at one point (at least in Japan) was a secondary mascot: I can see Jigglypuff being the mascot if they were able to put Green in the game as a female version of Red.

While not THE mascot, I think Meowth deserved a much bigger push as Pikachu's rival and foil. Him never being playable in Smash Bros is a travesty to me.

I feel like Pikachu was a good choice, it has a very striking visual design and unique name that is still easy to say and remember.
It does lead to problems for new fans, though, who may not realize it is not an easy pokemon to use well at times. It is all over the place in terms of moves it can use, it has terrible defenses(though it did get a little bit better with some generation changes), and without Light Ball, it is just awful if you don't evolve it. Not that Raichu's amazing, but it's much better.
That can be discouraging to someone new who might have difficulty with the game. It does seem like Game Freak could stand to give it some more love.

Honestly, they pretty much nailed it with Pikachu intentionally or not. In a sense the fact that he was just another Mon in-game for Pokemon RBG really helped sell the idea that there were that many unique Pokemon out there to interact with, as well as the freedom of picking your team. Fun fact, it wasn't going to be Pikachu at first
Clefairy was the original Mascot for Pokémon but I believe it was changed last minute to Pikachu because they believed he could be more marketable as the figurehead
Needless to say they were right.

Honestly, I'm surprised that it didn't get a Mega Evolution when those were introduced. Sure it's technically the middle evolution between Pichu and Raichu, but it's the one people even outside of Pokemon know of. Either that or give it some form of natural evolution as an alternative to Raichu. Something with a super happy Pikachu at a certain level in daytime or something makes...I dunno...some friend of mine once suggested Tenchu as such a thing.

Another thing about Pikachu is he's not too cute like Clefairy and not too tough like something like Charizard, it's in that middle area where it can appeal to everyone.

Pikachu is the best possible mascot they could have picked. His design is simple, bright and cute, thus he's perfect to market. Plus his black eyes give him a teddy bear like appearance, so kids would naturally want him as a toy in any form. And his small size makes him easy to write in an underdog position. You can't do that with Charizard, Lucario (even though he's my personal favorite) or the other more "badass" Pokémon. I think I would've gone with Charmander, since he's a "small, cute" Pokemon that evolves into "badass" Charizard.

Arcanine or Ninetails should be more featured. Like put their majestic faces on everything.
As for official mascot I gotta go with the mighty Bellsprout. Nothing says "Buy this game" like a Bellsprout.
