So I finally bit the bullet and I'be started watching LU. I've only seen the first couple of episodes of the first season but it's interesting. I have a few observations/questions for the long time fans.
What's going on with that crowd? Are they all plants?
The camera angles really put me off, some are great but they flip around too much. In the tag match I saw it really messed with my bearings on what was going on and who was where!
I love the cinematic type backstage stuff, when I heard about it I didn't see how it could possibly work but it does.
The set up and production oddly reminds of Wrestling Society X.
That ring announcer is horrendous!
The matches do seem slightly over produced, what with the fake sounding crowd and so many camera cuts it feels like I'm watching a film fight scene rather than a wrestling match.
I forgot how hot Maxine is!
Vampiro has a great voice for colour commentary.
Is this supposed to viewed as a wrestling promotion or a TV show about a wrestling promotion, if that makes sense?
So far so good really. It's certainly an alternative and they've done a great job of introducing me to the characters.

When it comes to the WSX comparison, I think I read that it's the same place but I could be wrong.
And the audience is not all plants. Maybe some are, I'm not sure. But the reason it seems like the same people is because it's always filmed from the same location, like how you see the same people at Full Sail for the NXT shows.
Also, keep watching. The season finale, Ultima Lucha, was probably the best single wrestling show of 2015.

I just want to register my upset that you don't like Melissa Santos. She's awesome.

The crowd started out as having quite a few plants in them.
By the midpoint of the season though, there's a noticeable shift away from that as either the plants got super into the show or more actual wrestling fans started showing up.
I like the ring announcer.
Yeah, the camera work is less conventional, but I think people are so used to WWE style that it takes a bit to get used to a different format. Once you've watched a few eps, it becomes less noticeable and WWE's zoom in/out stuff becomes unbearable.
Overall though, it is supposed to be more cinematic and less "here's a live sporting event, but televised."
I've gotten the impression that its more a TV show about a wrestling promotion. Generally wrestlers don't acknowledge the camera (a few exceptions aside). They don't pretend they're not there, but there's less overt talking into the camera (adding to the cinematic feel). Plus the backstage segments are all shot like short films. So I'd say its more a show about a promotion.

Something else I should add is about the camera angles. They are different than WWE but they get less crazy after the first few episodes, and they stop showing the announcers from the fishbowl lens or whatever after like 2 or 3 episodes.

I would say the fans are like the audience for the old school territory shows.

It is not a wrestling promotion but indeed a tv show that uses wrestling as the core to all of its story telling.
The camera angles never bothered me and the more I listened to interviews with guys like chris dejoseph and erik vanwaganen I come to appreciate just how much care and detail they have taken to truly make what they do truly different...according to them they use something like a 9 camera set up which is why we get all the awesome angles and shots.
the crowd very early on there were plants but once you reach around aztec warfare that is no longer the case.
As you progress through the season IMO especially if it truly is grabbing your attention you will come to love all the details even the truly little ones that they throw in that you would not notice on a first watch through and it will become like a new norm because every other promotion to me now just looks like they are moving in slow motion lol.
But lost points with the believers for not loving Melissa Santos ...Boooooo that man lol.
