I know these have been memed to death, but two movies to check out are Downfall and Lebanon. The first is about being in the bunker when the Nazi's in the bunker at the end, and Lebanon is about a Israeli tank team, and the whole movie for the most part take place in a tank and captures the clostophobic feel.

Also, I don't think that I can recommend it as a 'war movie' but "Kelly's Heroes" is a damn fun heist flick.

Of those I don't think have been mentioned I like A Midnight Clear and Casualties Of War. Casualties of War is likely the saddest war movie I've seen. It's a very good movie.

Before I joined the Army my favorite would have been something from John Wayne WWII related.
But after serving ,well my mindset about war and stuff majorly changed. So it is Full Metal Jacket. Which oddly we watched in Army BCT.

Glory. It's one of my all-time favorite films. Denzel Washington was stellar in it.

To Hell And Back, based on Audie Murphy's autobiography.
A good miniseries I saw on Netflix was called 14: Diaries of the Great War. Following the lives of 14 different people and their experiences during WW1.

Do you consider Bridge on the River Kwai a war film?

Modern War films my number one genre of film I really dislike. There is nothing more unenjoyable to me than watching a true story of a bunch of soldiers getting mown down by machine gun fire, a tale of persecution by Nazis or spending hours waiting for some sniper to finally take a shot. If I want that I'll watch the news or read an informative book about it. Or maybe it's that most of these films seem to revolve around military authority being right and logic going out the window, involve American warfare, are just so damn depressing (Come and See is the single most distressing/depressing film I've seen, and that's after watching Threads) or a combo of all three. Being an Englishman I want different big budget war films about the Napoleonic wars, Crimea, The Spanish Armada, The Battle of Hastings etc ... but none of these ever get a look in or if they do its asian war or small independent films like Downfall, instead we get films like Fury, Jarhead, Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker ... but I'd expect nothing less from Hollywood ... The exception to all of that is Submarine films, they are always great. Do you consider Bridge on the River Kwai a war film? I would, one of the very few modern war films I actually like.

Platoon ... You can hate Barnes all you want but he was right Right about what, specifically? That he was right because Elias 'went against the machine'? (My question is not meant to be rhetorical; please take it at face value.)
