For the longest time, I avoided war movies. I did so because I hate the idea of war, feel that most wars are unnecessary, and assumed that war movies glorify war. (You have to understand, the first movie posters I saw that gave off connotations of war were Rambo III and Top Gun, and both of those films glorified war.)
Fast forward many years later, and I was exposed to Apocalypse Now by a high school teacher who developed some of the most meaningful curriculum I was ever exposed to. Later, after watching Full Metal Jacket, I smartened up to the fact that action movies that depict warfare do not belong in the same genre as war films. True war movies depict the horrors of war and what a terrible experience it is for those involved.
It was in 2013 that I saw Platoon, and feel that may well be the best war movie I have ever seen.
In October, I saw the first quarter of Saving Private Ryan. This was a film I didn't like. It did indeed show the dark side of war, but it didn't have much of a plot or dialog. Perhaps that makes it more life-like than the other films I cited, but I'll take those titles over SPR any day of the week.
I'm curious about seeing Born on the Fourth of July. A part of me laughs at the fact that Tom Cruise first starred in Top Gun, only to star in this film afterward. What I know about Born on the 4th is that it depicts the life of a vet whose body was maimed by warfare, and he struggles to adjust to life back in the 'real world' that is largely indifferent to his challenges and experiences.
P.S. When it comes to war, I find the Vietnam War a lot more intriguing that WW2 or any wars in the Middle East.

If you like Vietnam ones, Deer Hunter's maybe a good one. It's much more about the effect of war on a few characters than on a grander scale, but it's a very good movie from what I remember, I haven't seen it in like 12 years.

Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb I've seen that film, but don't consider it a war film. For one thing, it's political satire. More to the point, it doesn't depict the horrors or war. You don't see things from the point of view of those who are put in harm's way. If Dr. Strangeglove is a war film, so too is Wag The Dog.

Awesome, thanks for the recommendation! Has anyone seen Born on the 4th of July?

Joyeux Noel
It<s about the Christmas truce in 1914 and if it doesn't tug at your heart strings then you have no soul.

Restrepo: it's a documentary about an army platoon in Afghanstan moving onto a ridge over looking an important valley after the Taliban killed a young medic assigned to the platoon. They created a patrol base center ended around basically one weapon an MK19 (machine gun that fires subsonic 40mm high explosive grenades). That is not a big weapon system but between occupying that space and sending out patrols this small unit lived out far away from a support base rocked the Taliban out there in vengeance for Restrepo the dead medic.
The September Tapes: a docudrama about a naive American who travels to Afghanistan in early 2002 under the pretense of filming a movie about how Bin Laden escaped Tora Bora. Except he was lying and is trying to find Taliban members attached to Al Queda to kill. The whole thing was filmed for less than my house note and uses no CG or special effects. They used actual live fire AK47's and fired at the camera and made quick unnoticeable cuts that made it look like the actors were in the line of fire. Us GIs all thought this had been a real story when it came out but we're disappointed mildly when we found out the truth. The film is so real it's hard to get thru some parts if you've been over there or been in the two way firing range.
Full length feature war films that I think we're top shelf: Patton Platoon (great story that expresses an eternal struggle, it is the truth though. You can hate Barnes all you want but he was right) The Pacific Generation Kill- read this book in 05 then was stoked HBO did a series on it. Great show that lets America know that we are all jack asses and screw off constantly, rather than the poster boys they are sold by fox, CNN and the DOD. But no matter how much f@&$ery occurs we still do our job and take it very seriously

"Stalag 17".
And if you like audio drama, find a Canadian-made show called "Afghanada" about Canadian soldiers stationed in Afghanistan post-9/11.

A non sarcastic vote for Star Wars. I can't stand realistic war movies, they're all the same. Guys heavy whispering cliché military lingo in a foxhole for 3 hours.
