they'd probably be even more valuable if people were actually willing to pay money for old VHS tapes

Used to work at a video store, and knew of dozens of people who collected Disney videos because they believed in their collector value. Eventually we stopped renting Disney movies that had been 'put in the Disney vault' so people wouldn't steal them. Definitely had "The Little Mermaid" with the 'controversial' cover, along with "Beauty and the Beast"... I think "Jungle Book" was also vaulted back then...
I remember seeing the cover for "Delirium" on our shelf, but I never watched it.

Yeah I remember back in the day I would see commercials for Disney VHS's that they said they were selling for a limited time before putting it back in the Disney Vault. I don't know if that was actually bullshit or if Disney actually only sold VHS's for a limited time.

I've also heard that certain 1996-97 WWF tapes (Mind Games, It's Time, and Cold Day in Hell in paticular) are extremely rare and valuable. Not sure if the network has shrunk their value though. As for Disney, i would have thought the white box tapes with the neon mickey opening logo would have been the more valuable ones.

They sell for a limited time, then collector's prices soar.

Not just Disney, mind you, but all companies eventually pull their stuff, Disney just never gave it back.

That Beauty and the Beast tape isn't worth anything, but that article is pretty badly researched.

That Beauty and the Beast tape isn't worth anything, but that article is pretty badly researched. Well it is from an Australian site. So the version they had might be the rare one.

they'd probably be even more valuable if people were actually willing to pay money for old VHS tapes Some horror fans actually prefer VHS to some other formats. Nostalgia, sure, but the drawbacks are actually a benefit in horror sometimes, since a lot of special effects in the past really don't hold up with higher definition, since it makes some props, etc, more obvious. That, and some folks really like the graininess for atmosphere with horror films. I can see the appeal, but generally prefer the handiness of digital.

Going to call BS on that one. I can believe there are VHS tapes that fetch a good collector price due to rareness, but some of the ones they list are common as can be. There is probably something they are leaving out, like the infamous "penis castle" cover for the Little Mermaid tape.

Id say over here the most pricey VHS tapes would be the "Video Nasties" era stuff
Also some niche horror movies such as "The Uninvited" And Big Box "Child's play*" movies can fetch a good price
*Due to HEAVY controversy (For a while) over here
