Talked about this in the NBA thread.
What if the Cavs didn't trade for Love? Would they have they been better off?
What are some trades that make you say What If

Possibly the biggest what if being if the Colts-49ers trade happened, as talked about on the Elway to Marino 30 for 30. {Spoiler}I think Baltimore finds a way to keep a Montana led Colts while the 49ers win a couple of Super Bowls with Elway but end up worse off.

When Rey Ordonez went down in 2000, the Mets had a deal in place that would've sent top prospect Alex Escobar and two pitchers to Cinci for Barry Larkin. The Mets refused to extend Larkin and the deal died at the last minute. We instead traded for Bordick (giving away Melvin Mora in the process.)
A Larkin led Mets would've given them a better chance against the Yankees that year.

What if the Colts drafted Ryan Leaf and the Chargers took Payton Manning.
What if the Jets chose Marino over Ken O'Brien

It looked like the Mets were on pace to get Roy Oswalt at 06 trade deadline, but Duaner Sanchez got into an accident in a cab, and they had to cancel all plans to get bullpen help so they traded with the Pirates to get Roberto Hernandez and Oliver Perez. If Sanchez doesn't hop in the cab, do the Mets get Oswalt and are able to hold on and advance to the WS that they were favored to win?

DiMaggio for Williams. That one came close in a drunken trade. Both those men were in "the wrong ballpark" and they put those numbers up. If they had spent half of each season in the "correct" ballpark for their hitting style who knows what numbers both would have.

What if the Chris Paul to the Lakers trade was never vetoed?

What if the Chris Paul to the Lakers trade was never vetoed? As a Lakers fan... On one hand, we land Dwight and our Big 4 of Dwight, Kobe, Gasol, and Paul perhaps brings us another championship run. On the other hand, I don't trust this organization to get it right. The Lakers management has been a reason why the team has been so bad. They're clueless, spineless, morons. So Idk.

What if the Colts drafted Ryan Leaf and the Chargers took Payton Manning. That was never in the cards at all. Everyone treated it like they were options 1A and 1B, but that most certainly was not the case. The Colts never seriously considered Leaf and according to the reports at the time the Chargers were REALLY hoping that the Colts might take Leaf because they also coveted Manning.

I thought the Rockets were getting Gasol in the trade. I think thats true, actually. Which made it sooooo awkward when it was vetoed. The trade that was vetoed was as follows: the Lakers land Chris Paul. The New Orleans Hornets receive Goran Dragic, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, and the New York Knicks' 2012 first-round pick. The Rockets receive Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. However, going back to December 2011, the following trade rumors were reported in the aftermath of the veto: the Warriors offered Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Ekpe Udoh to the Hornets for Chris Paul and the Los Angeles Clippers offered DeAndre Jordan, Al-Farouq Aminu, Eric Bledsoe, and a top-10 protected pick in 2012. You want to play the "what if" game, imagine a world in which the Splash Brothers are playing for the New Orleans (now Charlotte) Hornets and Chris Paul is in Golden State. The domino effect from that one trade alone would have completely changed the NBA landscape as we know it.

The Reds originally wanted Dave McNally and Jim Palmer for Frank Robinson but thank God that didn't happen.
The Cardinals was going to trade Stan Musial to the Phillies for Robin Roberts but Musial said he would retire if traded so the deal never went through.

If Andrew Wiggins becomes a Hall of Famer, the Love trade was still worth it for the Cavs.
LeBron is 31. Kevin Love gives the Cavs the best chance at winning in the short term. That's why the deal made sense.
Here is a crazy one (and this is the claim from former Lightning GM Brian Lawton):
What if Tampa Bay accepted the Habs' trade offer for Vincent Lecavalier in 2009?
The reported offer was Carey Price AND PK Subban AND Max Pacioretty.

What if TO accepted the original trade to Baltimore? He'd waste away there with Boller at QB. May have done some damage in 2006, but who knows if he would have even been there in 2006.

At different times the Yankees had trade offers for all of the core 90s dynasty players except Jeter who was always untouchable.
In what would have been a huge trade during 1991 spring training the Yankees supposedly offered Bernie Williams, Kevin Maas, Roberto Kelly, Jesse Barfield and a pitching prospect to the Pirates for Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla. Instead Bonds and Bonilla left as free agents and the Pirates wandered the desert for about 20 years, Barfield and Maas were gone from the majors by 1995, Kelly got traded for Paul O'Niell and Bernie Williams won 4 World Series.
After Don Mattingly retired following 1995 division series loss to the Mariners the Yankees needed a new first basemen and began talking to the Mariners about Tino Martinez. Originally the Mariners wanted Andy Pettitte and Russ Davis for Martinez, Jeff Nelson and Jim Mecir but the Yankees were able to talk them down to Sterling Hitchcock and Davis instead. Then in 1999 after some elbow issues the Yankees almost traded Pettitte to the Phillies for Adam Eaton, Reggie Taylor and Anthony Shumaker. Torre and Cashman talked Steinbrenner out of the deal.
Also after the 1995 season the Yankees were trying to acquire David Wells who was then with the Reds. The Reds asked for Ruben Rivera and Jorge Posada, supposedly Steinbrenner (Again), offered Mariano Rivera and Posada instead. The Reds decided to take the Orioles offer of Curtis Goodwin and Trovin Valdez.
