Jordan has always been an uncompromising guy, but his booming success and fame in the NBA gave him the unlimited clout to do whatever he wanted. I don't think it's unfair to say that he ruled the Bulls roster in the 90's in a way he didn't in the 80's. No one is arguing that Jordan wasn't better than Drexler, just that he would have a hard time pushing the local favorite out so easily. He hand picked a head coach in his fourth year in the league. He was always a transcendent talent and was treated as such immediately. 4th year in the league versus a trade offer for when he was drafted. I don't buy the idea that Jordan calls the shots anywhere he goes from day 1 when even your argument isn't that was what happened in Chicago where he was the end-all, be-all. Drexler/Jordan could have been another Kobe/Shaq, or worse, but I don't think Jordan goes for the power play his rookie year, and I don't think it would have worked there at that time. Drexler's status in Houston was nothing to sneeze at.

Drexler's status in Houston was nothing to sneeze at. Jordan was coming into the league with a series of BIG talent to get to that point, though, and people knew he was going to be big. Just going with all the other "What Ifs" with Jordan that are KNOWN from the 1984 Draft in addition to the Sampson for Drexler/2 pick move: Chicago was offered the following things for the number 3 pick: -Dallas offered Mark Aguirre straight up for number 3. -Seattle offered Jack Sikma for number 3. -Golden State offered Joe Barry Carroll for number 3. -Philadelphia made two separate offers: One was Julius Erving straight up for the three pick, the other was Andrew Toney and the number 5 pick for the 3 pick. (Considering that the 5 pick went on to become Charles Barkley, the Erving for Jordan trade would have been almost as good a What If? as the Houston trade.) All of this before the other, related what if for the Houston trade: Patrick Ewing was very close to entering the draft that year as well before changing his mind and returning to Georgetown. It was also said if Ewing did declare, Houston planned to take him first, with Olajuwon going second to Portland (Chicago still had Jordan higher on their list than Sam Bowie due to Bowie's injury record and still would have taken him third, though.)

I always wondered what Pittsburgh Penguins be like if they drafted Jonathan Toews instead of Jordan Steal? Would they be a dynasty franchise? Would Chicago be a dominant franchise or a respected franchise or a cess pool franchise? Hell what if Pittsburgh chose Backstrom and Kessel instead of Jordan Steal. Hell I would normally question what if St. Louis picked one of those three instead of Erik Johnson but they did quite well flipping him into Shattenkirk who is an elite franchise defenseman Better question. What if Pittsburgh would have taken Filip Forsberg instead of Derrick Pouliot (Hell, What if their management weren't such boobs that they didn't give away Simon Despres for less than nothing just because Bill Guerin had a bug up his ass about the guy?)? The Toews answer is easy. Pittsburgh would have screwed up Toews' development and he wouldn't be nearly as highly regarded as he is.

What if the Hawks and Jazz didn't pass on Chris Paul in the 2005 draft? The Hawks badly needed a point guard, but Utah passing over him in the next pick is as strange a decision because Paul has proven to be the best player of the 2005 class, and arguably a top 3 point guard in the league.
More importantly, if he got drafted 2nd or 3rd instead of fourth, does Paul direct his efforts into proving Atlanta and Utah wrong, as he did when New Orleans wound up drafting him? Is CP3 the player we know today if he lands with the Hawks or Jazz rather than the Hornets?

Being fair, Atlanta DID botch the pick badly by going with Marvin Williams- but at least with Utah it is defendable- Deron Williams was a comparably good PG to Paul for a good period of time, even if he declined earlier than Paul did. Paul may have been better, but it wasn't so much that you have to laugh at Utah for picking Williams either. Likewise, that probably does answer the What If, since in all likeliness Paul and Williams's careers do the same thing they did before- do well in their teams, fight for "best PG in the draft" for a few years, ask for a trade out of Utah/New Orleans at similar times, and then have the same careers they do now.

It's why so many teams have been consistently bad. I honestly think teams used Chad Ford's mock drafts as their scouting. Seriously, just look at the 2005 draft. Even back then I never got the love for Marvin Williams. He didn't have a position in college and was the 6th man (on a great college team true) but I never got the love of him as a top 2 pick. Hell Andrew Bogut to me was a no brainer before the injuries took their toll on him, but I never got the Williams love. To me, Bogut and Paul were the clear cut 2 best players in that draft.

if Eric Lindros had put on his big-boy pants and played for the Nordiques I doubt the Avalanche ever would've won the Stanley Cup given everything they got from Philly in exchange for him. I doubt they would've been able to snag Patrick Roy after the move, either.

A few from baseball (other than Jeter):
2008: What if the Rays drafted Buster Posey over Tim Beckham?
2004: What if the Padres drafted Justin Verlander over Matt Bush?
1990: What if the Braves drafted Todd Van Poppel over Chipper Jones?
1966: What if the Mets drafted Reggie Jackson over Steve Chilcott?

What if literally any NFL team took a chance on Tom Brady before the 6th round. He's from San Mateo, he grew up a Niners fan, Joe Montana was his idol, he wanted to be a Niner, and the Niners take Giovanni Carmazzi instead of him. Dammit Niners, you knew about him, and he would have signed in a heartbeat.

Sure, he could've started in 2004, but would he really develop into the QB he became? I think Aaron Rodgers over Alex Smith would've been the more surefire success than picking Tom Brady in 2000, imo.

What if literally any NFL team took a chance on Tom Brady before the 6th round. Ding ding ding ding I don't think Brady would have reached those heights. I think he benefited greatly early on with the good defense and stability everywhere else. I cannot think of another team that has had that. I think the bigger question around Brady is what if Bledsoe doesn't get hurt?

What if literally any NFL team took a chance on Tom Brady before the 6th round. I wonder what would have happened if he got drafted to a lower team with a crap O-line. Not to detract from his talent, but NE at the time had a bunch of pieces in place and only a few years away from their last Super Bowl. I don't think he would be mentioned in the list of best QBs if he was drafted earlier as a Brown or a Lion.

1983. Chicago Bears trade the #5 Pick to The Raiders for Howie Long. Raiders draft Dan Marino. Raiders trade Marino to Baltimore for Elway.

I don't think Brady would have reached those heights. I think he benefited greatly early on with the good defense and stability everywhere else. I cannot think of another team that has had that. I think the bigger question around Brady is what if Bledsoe doesn't get hurt?At some point, Tom Brady would have supplanted Drew Blesdoe as the Patriots' starting quarterback. Bill Belichick was looking for a reason and he happened to get it when Mo Lewis caved Bledsoe's chest in during the second game of the 2001 season. According to Michael Holley's "War Room", Belichick wanted to trade Bledose during training camp in 2001 and open the season with Brady or Damon Huard as the Patriots' starting quarterback, however, Robert Kraft ultimately vetoed any suggestion that Bledsoe would be traded or released, as he had just signed Bledsoe to a 10-year, $103 million contract. Basically, Bledsoe's injury was all that Belichick needed to go to one of his guys, be it Huard or Brady. In fact, the Bledsoe-Brady situation happened for Belichick nearly 10 years earlier, when Belichick cut Bernie Kosar in the middle of the 1993 season and that sent people in Cleveland into a rage, as Kosar was the local star who had been with the Browns since 1985. So Belichick had the confidence at some point to say nuts to the fans and nuts to the owners and go with what he felt was the best decision for the team. There's a reason why the Patriots carried four quarterbacks on the roster in 2000: Belichick had that much faith in Brady and didn't want to risk releasing him to the practice squad and watching as another franchise scooped him up. Even if Bledsoe finished the 2001 season and started all 16 games for the Patriots, the writing was on the wall. He was going to be let go and Brady was going to become the full-time starter, probably as early as 2002.
