Or even earlier when you had a lot of Avengers fans accusing Bendis of shoving his "pet character" Luke Cage down their throats and how Luke Cage didn't deserve to be an Avenger. You mean Spider-Woman right? I never heard anyone have a problem with Luke Cage. As for what you said for Deadpool being the only new character to transition does Jessica Jones not count? Or the GotG? (Yes I know the team name is from 80's and Drax,Gamora and technically Groot are as well but all the merch was moved by Rocket and Star-Lord who were both more recent than DP

People were constantly complaining about Bendis pushing him through his Avengers run. It's only been recently, when he was ironically no longer an Avenger that people started calling his prominence "organic" or what have you.

I think with Cage it was less to do with race or the character, and more that Bendis was using him as a prime Avenger, while ignoring or writing the other older and more traditional Avengers as idiots.
There will have been a few racists moxed in there, but I dont think it was the majority. People disliked Bendis, not Luke Cage

Re: Nighthawk's cancellation... Would that book worked better, a.k.a. sold more, a) if it were an OGN instead of a monthly series and b) marketed primarily to the digital and bookstore markets, with the direct market making up the difference? Hyperion #1 sold 31,000 issues. #2 sold 16,000. Squadron Supreme #1 sold 48,000. #7 sold #19,000. Nighthawk #1 sold 34,000. Given how Marvel saturates the markets with titles of various quality and name recognition, is it really surprising that a book like Nighthawk, a monthly at $4, couldn't find its audience? Or that the direct market readership was too fickle with its dollars and its tastes to give it a try (again, in a sea of monthly books that both companies churn out)? The rebooting/renumbering/continuity problems of the Big Two, would they be less of a issue if DC and Marvel shifted to the OGN, mini- or maxi-series format (at reasonable prices and made of reasonable quality paper/binding) instead of insisting on periodicals? Maybe then books like Nighthawk can find their niche, locate their audience, and be profitable enough as an 80 page OGN instead of 6 issue series that will be collected as a single TPB. Or, make digital the means by which people purchase periodicals, say 99 cents a book, and save hard copy OGNs and TPBs for the DM and bookstore markets? It's not a perfect picture with OGNs, but I don't know if it's an idea that can be dismissed outright either if people want books with original minority characters to survive, if not thrive. www.comicsbeat.com/retailer-roundtable-are-graphic-novels-a-shtty-business-model/www.comicsbeat.com/its-time-to-rethink-about-how-graphic-novels-are-read/ icv2.com/articles/columns/view/33836/facing-graphic-novel-erait doesn't help that he's basically an ersatz Batman at a company that already has another, more successful erstz Batman in Moon Knight.

Rocket and Starlord are both from the 70s.
They got a 'push' later sure, but are in no way modern characters.

That's an interesting way to spell "It's going to look terrible." Is that the guy who traces porn stars for his art? Yep, and pretty much everything else too. A quick Google-search will enlighten you.

Meh week on the DC side of things. I decided to give Earth 2: Society a shot and picked up the first two trades.
A book I didn't know was coming out, Suicide Squad War Crimes Special #1 came out as well that I picked up. It's written by John Ostrander, so I figured why not?

John Ostrander + Suicide Squad = must buy. Must must must. I also saw that Bruce Redondo's name on that Earth 2 annual and figure I'll grab that, despite having given up on E2:Society about an issue or 2 in. He did a ton of issues of Injustice, and a very very nice Human Target mini a few years back (when the TV show was on), and has become an artist to enjoy.
