I must have missed it when it aired live because as I was reading "Long Bomb", a book all about the XFL, I found myself in disbelief about the cheerleader fantasy. I was just reading it thinking, "there's no earthly way this actually happened." But lo and behold thanks to YouTube, it exists and it's just as baffling and absurd as I expected it to be.

I am currently reading Long Bomb, and after reading the chapter titled "A Grand Illusion" it makes perfect sense in retrospect that NBC would invest in the XFL as a fifty-fifty partner. When you consider the exorbitant cost of rights fees for big league sports, it might make more economic sense to just start (or co-start) your own league. Sure it wouldn't have the same cache as the NFL. But at least you don't have to worry about losing the TV rights and get a bigger cut of any profits. So mock NBC all you want, but gambling $69,000,000 on your own (or half your own) league isn't so bad versus renegotiating billion dollar deals every couple of years.
I wonder if letting outside people buy the XFL franchises instead of having them all be league owned could have helped the XFL's chances. Would have brought in outside capital and might've helped remove the stigma of being the football league owned by the wrestling guy.

Also, it's funny watching XFL stuff on in retrospect. The in your face dude centered marketing and hyper sexualization of the cheerleaders looks like something out of the movie Baseketball.
Here's the initial XFL game day episode hosted by Opie and Anthony. The highlight being the Outlaws cheerleaders calling the Hitmen cheerleaders fat.
