Terry Wogan made Eurovision not only watchable but damn enjoyable with his sarcastic commentary on the proceedings.
Think the Mark Remark during a live broadcast of a continent-wide (and Australia now for some reason) song competition and your halfway into realising the gold it was.
His opening to the 2007 competition is one that's always stuck with me, just brilliant.
Rest in Peace Sir Terry!

As the winning nation gets to host it the following year, Terry would always want a place with a hot climate to win and guarantee himself a nice paid working holiday to look forward to. One year (of many) when it was getting close to the end of voting and Ireland were in with a shout of winning, Terry started saying something like "oh please not Ireland. I spent years trying to get away from that place!"

One of my favourites was him referring to the Danish hosts in 2001 as 'Dr Death and the Tooth Fairy'.

It was great for it's time, but it doesn't work anymore, despite Graham Norton's efforts to imitate it. Eurovision is a much better show now. Very polished and well produced, and usually you can't argue with the winner.
