..why did he get given so many shitty gimmicks and angles between '99 and 2001 like that god awful Tiger Ali Singh angle with Chaz? He deserved way better.
Like, he wasn't a main event caliber guy by any means, but if they'd let him keep his '98 persona and style, he would have been a really solid hand to have around in the mid/uppercard in the late 1990s/early 2000s. He was charismatic, fun, and capable of putting on great matches when necessary.

1) Scott Steiner knows why, because he "got big". (Around the time he dropped both titles to Jarrett.)
2) Rumors abound, he had the nerve to talk to Vince Russo in early 2000. Just talked. Russo asked if he considered jumping to WCW, and *gasp*, someone told the newsletters about it. Needless to say, Vince McMahon wasn't happy.
That's what I understood happened.

Remember when he showed up in early 2003 with Teddy Long at the beginning of the "White Boy Challenge" stuff only to be fired and replaced by the absolutely terrible Rodney Mack? I was so disappointed. I thought they were finally going to do something with D'Lo.

I think Foley said in his first book that D'Lo's confidence was shattered after the Droz accident even though it wasn't his fault, so that might have had something to do with it.

I was so disappointed. I thought they were finally going to do something with D'Lo. The funny thing is that was the second time in only a month span that they used Rodney Mack to replace someone in a role despite the fact that he was terrible and the original guy in the role was way better. They also had him replace B-2 Bull Buchanan as John Cena's lackey on Smackdown before they then moved him to Raw to take D'Lo's spot as Teddy's charge. I remember being so annoyed at the time that they would fire two guys who I liked and were doing fine in their roles just so they could replace them with this other who sucked.

Also he was one of Russo's boys, so when Russo left, D'Lo's push went with him.

Remember when he came back in like 2009 wrestled one match and then just disappeared?

Remember when he came back in like 2009 wrestled one match and then just disappeared? Ah yes, the heyday of "People didn't cheer this guy for one match on Raw, so drop him."

The chest protector gimmick when he was European Champion is still one of my favourite midcard gimmicks ever.

Most of D'Lo's career trajectory can be mapped to pre and post Droz.
THat tells its own story. Even if he didn't actually do anything wrong.

I think Foley said in his first book that D'Lo's confidence was shattered after the Droz accident even though it wasn't his fault, so that might have had something to do with it. This has always been my understanding, and I can't blame the guy in the slightest. What an awful thing to have happen, and I'm sure the paranoia follows you around for a long time after.
