Went to Tennessee (eastern part) for a week to visit family and explore the area. My thoughts: -The culture shock was more than I was even expecting. It's weird to go to a flea market and see guns, animals, etc being sold so freely. -It is impossible to have a bad biscuit there. In particular, Bojangles. -Speaking of food and drink, Cheerwine is awesome. -The difference between the southern accent in Virginia (where my family and I stopped to sleep yesterday) and Tennessee is like night and day. -I went to an Ole Smokey to sample Moonshine. They give you 10 shots for free. The feeling afterwards was interesting to say the least. -The Smokies are beautiful. One of my favorite sights to see ever. -Despite being touristy, I liked downtown Gatlinburg. -My four year old nephew got his first hole in one in mini golf and beat me All in all, it was a beautiful place to visit but I could never live down there permanently.

I've always wanted to move to Tennessee. Shame immigrating to the states would be near impossible since I don't have any particularly useful job skills.

Tennessee is cool. Nashville is an awesome city. Was there visiting friends on Halloween this year and had a great time.

Been to Memphis 4 times in the last 6 months.
Granted, it helps living less than 3 hrs away

I agree, Tennessee is fun to go to and I will definitely argue there's way more southern/Appalachian accent variants than people think there are.
Cheerwine is amazing and I wish I could find it further north, but that keeps it special for trips south.
Southern food is pretty much as close to "Authentic American cuisine" as you're gonna get. I love it.

Yes, Cheerwine is amazing. The lengths I go through to get some in Brooklyn sometimes mystify me.
I always wanted to visit Memphis. Been looking to try to take a three day weekend there sometime this spring or summer. Does anybody know how difficult it is to get Nashville Hot Chicken in Memphis (not from a KFC preferably)?

Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken is your best bet. There's a few scattered around the city, but the most notable one, is the one downtown. I say notable because it's been featured on Man Vs. Food and a few Food Network shows. I've never had Nashville hot chicken, so I can't compare the spice level. Gus's definitely has a nice kick to it, but it's not like scorching hot or anything. And recently I read that Gus's has expanded beyond the Memphis area to Chicago, Kansas City, and St. Louis.

I've been to Tennessee a couple of times the past few years, and it is quite nice. I'm from Virginia, so it's not really a culture shock in most ways, but seeing all the crazy shops and touristy spots in Gatlinburg was interesting. I'd say it's just as pretty here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but I love it there as well.
People would be surprised about how much stuff is packed into the Gatlinburg area.

I live in Tennessee. Cheerwine isn't my thing. Yes, we're kinda awesome most of the time.
PS Bojangles are opening up all over the place, but already in trouble because we won't part with our KFC most the time.

Remember, Gatlinburg is far far far superior to the hell hole that is Pigeon Forge.

I lived in Oak Ridge for a couple of years, and got to visit Gatlinberg. Man, that place was beautiful, especially lit up at night. I regret I never had the spare money for a day at Dollywood.

Gatlinburg was nice when I went...that car museum with all of the movie cars was pretty decent and considering how everything is packed on that strip, it doesn't seem too overcrowded....
I'm from SC so there's pretty much no culture shock to me anyway...although I think Gatlinburg is the Myrtle Beach of the mountains with the way its set up...

Galtingburg!
The only time I've ever heard of it was when it was referenced in "A boy named Sue".
*looks the place up*
Well damn that looks nice, it's completely ruined my mental image of the place as something out an old western.

Is Gatlinburg like Memphis? No. I live around Chattanooga. It's always neat for me to see how Northerners feel after they visit the South. I can see how the South would be extremely strange and a culture shock to someone who isn't from here. I felt the same way after I moved up North for a while. I couldn't deal with it and wanted to come back home. The South is still full of ignorance. A lot of places (Notably in Alabama) are very open with their racism and are stuck in an era that's long gone. Even with all that, it's home and I can't imagine living anywhere else. A lot of people want to act as if being a southerner and ignorant/racist are one in the same. Not the case at all. We don't all run around draped in Confederate flags. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit and didn't just dwell on how funny we talk .
