Anyone remember this? Goldy had been squishing guys in minutes, then all of a sudden he went up against Regal and had a really competitive match on a random Nitro.
Was there a reason for this? It just seemed strange at the time since he was being built up an an unbeatable monster.

Different story depending on who you listen too. Regal was told he had to get a six minute match out of Goldberg, Goldberg, as green as he was, couldn't follow Regal, and the match looked bad for Goldberg.

I've always found the way people talk about this match to be confusing. when I watched it live back then, I didn't blink an eyelid at the match, and I thought Goldberg looked perfect fine out there.
The announcers made the story clear from the beginning, and the wrestlers told that story in the ring. They said early, "Goldberg's been beating guys left and right, but he's never faced a mat wrestler like Regal who knows a million holds. This will be a new and big challenge, can he do it??" and then he did it. Totally normal stuff.

Story I read. Regal was told to make Goldberg "look good". Regal took this to mean do what he used to do working the circuit in the UK where he would do all the motion to make it look like someone who was completely green was out grappling him. Goldberg thought it was going to be his typical match. Goldberg didn't fully trust Regal because he was still pretty new and was worried about not looking unbeatable. So the match came off kind of awkward.

He didn't went there to shoot or embarrass Goldberg. Apparently Bischoff told him that he wanted a longer match out of Goldberg, so Regal set up chain wrestling spots, that Goldberg couldn't follow at that time.
I'm not blaming Goldberg because he was never taught those moves, hell pretty much everybody that went through the power plant has admitted that appart from conditioning, their training was shit.
Regal has said that he just followed Bischoff's instructions of a competitive match, that if Bischoff told him that he wanted a squash match, he would've done it and put over Goldberg that way.

To believe Regals side one would have to think Goldberg had already up to that point started believing his hype.
So I believe Regal.

I cant remember which documentary it was on, but Regal said something along the lines of
"Now if you tell me I've got 5 minutes, then I've got 5 minutes.. but I can't hit myself.."

Regal had minor offence, but compared to everyone else...IT MUST HAVE BEEN A SHOOT!
I read Regal's book about a year ago, and I don't remember any ground breaking revelations about the match other than he was constantly messed up on drugs at the time.

If the goal was to get a longer match out of Goldberg, what the hell else was Regal supposed to do? Roll in and out of the ring constantly to artificially add minutes to the match? It would hardly be convincing if we saw Regal prolong the match by going toe-to-toe with Goldberg using power moves and brute force. I like the match. Goldberg overcame a REAL challenge, and Regal's wrestling was superb. We we supposed to assume that Goldberg could do technical wrestling well just because he did very well as a power move wrestler?

From what I remember, Goldberg doesn't seem confused or lost at all, or only slightly in the beginning and then he has no problem with keeping up with Regal.
