Bonus points if the coach never even played that sport on a highschool level.

Not sure how many coaches fit that bill, but having coached on a college level (assistant coach, granted) myself, it has always seemed to me that your best coaches tend to have come from the equivalent of the upper midcard versus the main event. You don't tend to see many star players become successful coaches themselves, and I think a lot of that boils down to natural talent versus having to actually learn the nuances of the sport to compete at that top level.

Former Chelsea and Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas never played Football professionally. He got his first break as one of Sir Bobby Robson's coaches at Porto before becoming Jose Mourinho's assistant manager.

Vince Lombardi never played a day of football in the NFL.
Nick Saban has also only ever played college football and was never a standout. And Bill Belichick played Division III in college with no shot of ever playing pro.

Lou Holtz had a non-descript playing career, but a pretty stellar college football coaching tenure.

And Bill Belichick played Division III in college with no shot of ever playing pro. If anything, he had a more notable lacrosse career in college. Which I'm sure inspired this exchange in his Rescue Me cameo. Audio sucks, so here's a transcript: Belichick: You follow any sports? Fellow Party Attendee: A little soccer, a little tennis. How about you? Belichick: Lacrosse. Fellow Party Attendee: Huh, tough sport!

I remember reading somewhere that Todd Haley (former Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs and current Offensive Coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers) never played football a day in his life.

And Bill Belichick played Division III in college with no shot of ever playing pro. Bill Parcells played at what is now Wichita State, and got cut from the Lions before ever playing a down in the NFL. Bob Stoops only played college ball, Geno Auriemma, Coach K and Bobby Knight never made it to the NBA. I don't even know if Auriemma played college ball. There are guys who just have an incredible mind for their respective sport. They may not have had great top level talent, but their minds just see the game better than damn near everyone else.
