I was reading old dirt sheets about Shawn Michaels getting fired the week of WrestleMania 17 for showing up drugged out and being sent home instead of being used on television. A few of these third sheets claimed that they were going to use him in a special referee role similar to the one he had ten years later in the match between Triple H and The Undertaker. Shawn was to screw over Undertaker and this would lead into Triple H and Michaels vs Undertaker and Kane at Backlash 2001. So if it were you, how would you book Shawn Michaels if he returned in 2001 instead of 2002 beginning with his involvement at WrestleMania 17? Would you make him a face or a heel?
I'll post my pay-per-view bookings in a bit, I had a few minutes being bored on my lunch break.

Not that it matters but I remember that he was supposed to face HHH at wm17 and that's why they started the taker/HHH storyline so late,H was holding out hope for Shawn but when he was in no condition to perform at Raw they gave up.

Who was Taker gonna face then? I can't remember but that year the undercard was put together at the last minute.I seem to remember Beniot being a heel in the radicals 2 weeks before mania and then on the go home raw they put together him as a babyface against angle. hhh has even said he almost faced Ray Lewis at mania 17.

For a moment there I thought this thread was about a failed Reebok shoe deal with HBK in 2001.

A couple years ago I re-watched 2000 thru Mania 17 and was surprised how thrown together everything was but an over product and a great main event can hide that stuff.

This was round about the time they made Jericho Doink. They should never have made him Doink.

Amongst the number of WWE talents (and the ones that shouldn't have, like Test and Christian) that should've taken up WCW stripes to bolster their ranks/stars, I'd have Jericho turn earlier and join WCW as one of their center pieces. You can then essentially have HBK vs Y2J of 2003 in 2001, and maybe we could remember something of the invasion that didn't leave us feeling like someone pissed in our coffee.

In a perfect world, he WOULD have screwed over Taker, reunited with HHH (noy necessarily as "DX"), Austin would have stayed face and you have him and Taker battling and interchanging with HHH/Shawn.

Have Shane McMahon announce that Shawn Michaels is the first big signing to the new WCW.
Either go from there with Shawn leading the Alliance (or WCW's own show) and keep Austin as a hero against the group.

I think he'd have to be a face, I just don't see him being off for 3 years and getting booed on his comeback. If he came back in 2001, and was sober/reborn/healthy, then the storyline could have been that he was coming back to help Team WWF against the Alliance. The problem with 2001 wasn't that Shawn Michaels wasn't there, it was that Vince didn't shell out the money for the nWo, Goldberg, Flair, Sting, Steiner or any other big WCW star.
Imagine a Survivor Series match in 2001 of Hogan/Hall/Nash/Goldberg/Sting managed by Flair/Bischoff vs Austin/Rock/Undertaker/Michaels/Angle managed by Vince. That would have been incredible and completely changed how the invasion was looked on. You'd still have DDP, Booker T, Steiner, Angle, Kane, Big Show, Edge, Christian, RVD, Dudleys, Hardys, Dreamer, and everyone else to fill out the undercard. It could've been the greatest ppv in the history of professional wrestling.
