Has any top guy ever had a more mediocre year? The company was hurting financially so surely you'd figure they could find a better use for Bret than trying to get over a pirate and an evil dentist. The Lawler feud, which was certainly great when it started, was still going on and became full blown shitty comedy with the kiss my foot stuff. Even at Wrestlemania he's wasted in that terrible Backlund match (that Bret considers the worst of his career). Not the worst year ever, all things considered, as he did have some excellent matches but surely there far, far more effective uses for the guy.

2013 CM Punk was being said to get the Bret in 95 treatment, and it felt that way when he was bogged down with Axel and Ryback. But at least he had killer PPV matches with Taker and Lesnar.
I still like Bret's 95 though, mostly because I rented those PPV tapes all the time. That Hakushi match.

I've been rewatching the 95 PPVs recently and although Bret was in there with some guys with terrible gimmicks and feuds (he feuded over a jacket!) he was having matches with them that no one else IMO could have got out of them. Then there was his match with Hakushi that was really good and could have turned into a decent feud. Whilst Vince was fawning all over Shawn and Nash and booking shows around them, Bret just got on with it and remained as popular as ever. And who ended the year as Champ? (Even if it was basically a way to transition the belt to Shawn from Nash)

Agree fully with the above poster. I've been going through '95 on the network too and have just got to his excellent match with the Bulldog at the December In Your House show.
Bret certainly made his '95 a lot better than it had any right to be, especially in the 2nd half of the year when he feuded with Isaac Yankem and Pierre the Pirate.

Not related to 95, but I always thought Bret was calling ICO PRC, "IKA PRO"

I concur with the others. It was Bret making lemonade out of lemons. The New Generation was a bit of a sloppy era for everyone involved so I think no matter what Bret had been doing it would have been goofy all over but his in-ring work would always be the breath of fresh air from everything else going on.

I will say that, if nothing else, Bret's matches with Hakushi and PCO were amazing.

While Vince and the Authority were busy touching themselves over Cena vs. Orton for the World title, Bryan got on with his business and was over as hell.

1995 was a mess all around. The angles and gimmicks were atrocious but you could always count on Bret to deliver.

Bret's conundrum in 1995 was that the WWF had a real lack of decent heels. Taking a slight back seat to Nash wouldn't have been a problem had there been a solid heel side of the roster to produce some feasible feuds. I went to the Raw taping in July 1995 where he wrestled Hakushi in what was a terrific match (the IYH matches were also really good). It's really astounding to think of how out of touch they were with society of that time period and how much more in tune guys like Heyman and Bischoff were. Basically Vince's idea was to take guys from the USWA or SMW and repackage them with bad gimmicks and see if it got over.

i agree with the notion there just weren't many opponents for bret that year. top stars in wwf, 1995: bret, owen, shawn, diesel, undertaker are your top five, sure. undertaker is, like bret, in a bunch of goofy feuds. bret was with owen all last year. diesel and shawn are together, and both already feuded with bret (not that they couldn't do it again). they could've run bret-undertaker for a little while somehow, but who else was there? do we really feel deprived of bret losing to mabel? bret-razor could've worked i guess, but i think weird gimmicky feuds were just in at the time (in vince's mind), and therefore he had no other options.

Do you think a guy like Michaels would've put in any effort if he was dropped down the card and put into feuds with pirates? Hell no. Bret was a great sport.

I get what you mean, but now I'm imagining Vince trying to come up with the shittiest gimmicks possible: "Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jr.? Nah, not shitty enough. Let's just call him Sparky Plugg."

I think they should've turned Razor heel after the ladder match & had him & Bret battle for the number one contender spot leading up to Survivor Series vs Nash.

He should have challenged him to a fight at 'The Summerslam'... 95 was a strange year to be a fan what with the gimmick overload, but at least you could always rely on Bret to give you a great match. No politicking, no complaints just getting on with things and making the most of a bad situation. Good for him.

I think they should have raided WCW for Colonel Robert Parker and Bunkhouse Buck. These two dudes japping Bret Hart at every turn would have been money.
