Basically I know nothing about HDTVs because I really don't like the look of them and have never really desired to have one, buuuut I needed one for the PSTV I got for Christmas and for the PS4 I'm hoping to buy within the next month or so. Unfortunately I delegated on getting one so wound up going with a $50 one from a friend of a friend, but it turns out it doesn't support HDMI so I'm going to need to get a converter.
Only problem, besides the extra price tag, is... I have no idea where to start on that. I'm seeing price ranges on the things all over the map and various reviews of the cheaper ones saying they won't work with this or that. So can anyone recommend a solid but hopefully cheap one that should work with a PS4? Because that's really all I intend to use this TV for.

I have a 37 inch Vizio that I use and I love it. I got it for a wedding present about five years ago and it still looks great.

I second the Vizio recommendation. I bought a 43 inch model (an E43 model to be exact) back in August and it's been really solid. Works really well with my PS4 so no complaints there. I only have internet and not cable but the picture quality is great with just a standard antenna. It's also a smart Tv so it's got Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon and YouTube. I do wish that more apps were availabe for it but I just use my old Roku 3 for all the other apps I use.

Yeah, I third Vizio. Bought a 42 inch like 4 years ago and it works like brand new. I think I read somewhere that they are actually built with Sony parts, but that might just be a rumor. Either way, when it comes to both cheap and good, that's probably the best brand.

I got a 28 inch Insignia which is Best Buy brand for under $150 and am happy with it.

I too had a Vizio for four years before upgrading and I loved it, only reason I upgraded was that I got a 40 inch LG for free. I also have an Insignia and it works well too. I just avoid Emerson like the plague.

Most of them have "game" modes that reduce the input lag, so unless that's a HUGE deal to you and you compare them side-by-side, you likely won't notice unless the game mode is off. Now, refresh rates, that's the stat to watch IMO. 240 Hz actually makes a 60 FPS game/film look smooth, whereas a 120 Hz (while still looking excellent) won't make a 60 FPS game/film look much different than a 30 FPS game/film.
I'd also consider the type of room you're using it in. A lot of people just go with a "the bigger the better" mindset, but I've seen people buy 50-60 inch HDTVs for their dormroom and it's way too big for the room. I just have a 30 inch Samsung I got at Best Buy around Christmas for $160.
