Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter Man, it's gonna stick in the craw of some that the highest attended WWE show in history could be headlined by 21 year veteran Triple H, unloved top babyface Roman Reigns and airbender Shane McMahon.

Can we just pretend that Wrestlemania 3 had 193,000 people instead so that Hulk and Andre can still hold the distinction of the highest drawing main event in WWE history?

Honestly at this point I don't blame WWE for the creative decisions they make because whyshould they?
And if the majority of that crowd shows up just to boo Roman Reigns then screw them because by buying a ticket to the show then it justifies WWE pushing him by giving them money instead of voting with their wallets and affecting real change
For the record I don't hate Reigns, I'm not a fan but I'm not complaining about him and then still giving the WWE money

There's a thread in the other section but WM3 definitely didn't have 78,000. It's just not possible. The permanent seats in the Silverdome were about 82,000, there was no elaborate stage design and there were about 5,000-6,000 on the floor.
People ape what Meltzer says on this but look at video/pictures from that event and find 10,000 empty seats that would have needed to have been there for there to be an attendance of 78,000. It's not possible for that to have been the figure. Paid sure but no way were there only 78,000 people there.

To be fair, that's giving too much credence to the way the industry works now. People don't draw in wrestling any more, WWE does. Mania does. People will buy tickets to Mania because the good shit happens, it doesn't really matter who's on top these days.

I guarantee you that WWE announces a figure with six digits, especially if they do have the legitimate highest attendance record in company history.
It also shows you how strong the Wrestlemania brand is, since there were some notable holes in the roster this year, most notably the lack of John Cena (and Orton and Rollins) to push these last minute ticket sales.

And I hope a quarter of that audience just ups and leaves for the main event. yeah they have the money but I'd love to see them work that image into a Wrestlemania moment®

WrestleMania is the draw now, not any individual talent. They could have had the NXT card for the show and nothing would have changed.
With that said, HHH positioning himself to headline a show that will break an attendance record isn't all that surprising. Myself and others called it before even the Royal Rumble.

The vast majority of Mania tickets are sold months before even one match is announced.

If the NBA all-star game held 108,000, I can't see them not trying to top that.

No reason why they couldn't draw 100,000 legit. Depending on the size of the set, you could feasibly fit more people in AT&T for a wrestling show than the NBA All-Star Game (which I think currently holds the indoor attendance mark).
I would almost go minimalistic with the set in order to bring as many fans into the building as possible without exaggerating numbers.
Then again, I don't think Vince cares as long as the place looks like it's holding 100K.

Ugh whenever Dave brings up that 78,000 number for WrestleMania III, it makes my blood boil. There's no way there were that few people in the building unless WWE lied about the attendance figure, and Led Zepplin lied about theirs, and the Super Bowl lied about theirs, and the Detroit Lions lied about theirs for 25 years, and the Pope lied about his, and so on. He always defends that number by saying all attendance figures are gimmicked, when the NFL never makes a big deal out of attendance. I think Dave has written about wrestling so long that he thinks everyone is kayfabing all the time.
But back to 2016. If it truly is 84,000, there's no way in hell they announce that as the number. That's 15,000+ less than your run of the mill Cowboys regular season game. It'll be at least 100,000.

I honestly don't know why Meltzer is so stubborn about that WM 3 number. I can buy that it may not have been 93k, but it looked at least well over 80k.
Regardless, yes, the WWE will claim they drew over 100k for this event regardless of what the actual number is. WM has turned into a global phenomenon. They likely sold the majority of the seats before they even contemplated what the card would be, so it's a testament to how big the event is. Definitely the Super Bowl of this genre.

You can't have an attendance record until people actually attend.

The WWE is basically a functional alcoholic that the fans are enabling at thi point.. Less of a pro wrestling company and more of a cautionary episode of intervention truthfully.
Also , I was going to call them a highly functional alcoholic but highly functional is pushing it when it comes to this company right now.
