It's not surprising really, he had an inoperable brain tumour and went home last week to spend his final days with his family. He was never the most popular person here but he was a damn good magician and showman in his day and played a huge part in raising the profile of magic shows on TV. RIP.
Here's one of his best-known routines, which is still pretty impressive.

Didn't he die a week or more ago? No. It was revealed he had an inoperable tumour a few weeks back and that he didn't have long left to live but he didn't actually die until this morning.

Yes, you are correct. I'm not familiar with the man, but Penn Jillette was speaking about him on his podcast the same week Tom Mullica died, so I got a bit confused.
