It was before my time as a fan, though I've seen it since many times, what was the rationalization behind Jesse being the special guest ref during the MegaPowers vs. the MegaBucks?

The MegaBucks believed that Ventura would tilt the match in their favor, but Tunney appointed Ventura because On The Take Tunney believed Ventura could handle the match. I wanna say that Predator was coming out on VHS at the time and they wanted to capitalize off his appearance.

I think it was on a Brother Love Show a few weeks before Summerslam that Andre gave Jesse some cash in order to get him onside/intimidate him into favouring the heels.
Jesse's look of awe and mild fear at being face to face with Andre was such a contrast to his cocky braggart commentary persona. A nicely sold moment.

Still have no idea why he had the teams switch corners.

Still have no idea why he had the teams switch corners. He probably wanted to make sure that Elizabeth's ass ended up on the hard cam.

I miss Jesse on commentary so much. I know Heenan is worshipped here, but Ventura was easily the greatest color guy they ever had. He would have made MINCEMEAT out of Cole's personality/commentary.

To be fair. Jesse on commentary is worshipped here too. He may have even been a better commentator than The Brain but whilst Jess worked well with just about everyone they put him with, Gorilla and Heenan had such good chemistry, it amplifies how good they both were.

The non kayfabe reason, I would imagine would be to give a little more important to the main event since it was the first Summerslam. It was one of my favorites PPVs as a kid but I don't think the matches were much better than a normal house show. Hogan and Andre had been done multiple times and Macho and Dibiase wasn't really that awesome, given that Macho already beat Dibiase at WrestleMania (even with Hogan's help).

Other then Warrior's IC title win and the main event, the show felt very much like a house show as most of the matches were inconsequential and other then the main event all the feuds that had been built up on TV over the summer were ignored. Jake and Rude for example had a hot program at the time but instead of going against each other, were split off into different matches It was just very odd. This is the card they should've did; Mega Powers vs. Mega Bucks IC Title: Honky Tonk Man vs. Ultimate Warrior (subbing for Brutus Beefcake) Tag Team Titles: Demolition vs. Hart Foundation Jake Roberts vs. Rick Rude Jim Duggan vs. Hercules Ken Patera vs. Dino Bravo Don Muraco vs. Greg Valentine Junkyard Dog vs. Ron Bass Tito Santana vs. Bad News Brown Koko B. Ware vs. Big Boss Man Powers of Pain vs. Bolsheviks British Bulldogs vs. Fabulous Rougeau Brothers

Big ppv were more like one match shows, which would move feuds over, hype up the real big house events. Different era, and what not.

That was not to get him onside, there's no law against accepting free money!

I loved how subtle Jesse played it. Despite favouring heels on commentary, he played up that he was conflicted over whether to favour DiBiase and Andre or be impartial, rather than be the stereotypical paid off official who tries to screw the babyfaces every chance he gets. It added a nice layer to the psychology of the match.

I'll add that SummerSlam 88 itself was pretty much a 2 hour commercial for the Boxing card Vince was promoting. That in itself bombed majorly.

I always liked how Mean Gene tried to spin it that Jesse took a bribe from the Million Dollar Man until Jesse accurately stated that he never physically took DiBiase's money from him, DiBiase just put the money in his pocket. Why would he turn down free money?
