Well I guess for the wrestlers it's always been the ultimate goal, proof you are the best in the world and a nice big pay day. However for us fans the world title remained the ultimate goal, main-eventing WM was just a by-product of that but I think that has changed.
Now the group of wrestlers that have won a world title extends to guys like Swagger it's not such an exclusive club something which is further highlighted by the ridiculous way WWE discount certain wrestler's first title reign(s) like they did with Punk, Bryan and Roman.
As a result there has to be something more for a wrestler to stand out and we seem to have settled on the WM main-event being that differentiator. I think a few factors played into that including the way the WM main event became CM Punk's white whale, Miz using his WM main-eventer status as the cornerstone of his heel shtick and the whole Daniel Bryan debacle where only winning the title at WM cemented him as the top guy (as opposed to his previous wins).
I guess it's a natural consequence of the whole "reality era" mindset and this this new(ish) perception plays a part in the backlash Roman has received and will factor into every WM build from now on.

It's made what Russo said about the belts absolutely true. Not sure if it ALWAYS was, but quite transparent now.

It doesn't help that Mania season is...or, at this point, was...consideded WWE's only good season where wrestlers could have good matches and show personality.

The status of what is considered "main-eventing" Wrestlemania has changed in my mind. As a kid i always thought that going on last was the main event because it was for the title alot of the time but as we have grown we begin to see and understand that the real difference between going on last and main eventing is different now. Like for example Rock vs Hogan over Jericho vs Triple H at Mania 18. In my mind and maybe alot of others mind, the Main Event of that night was Rock vs Hogan but it didn't go on last which honestly it probably should have but because the match wasn't the WWF Undisputed Title Match it went on earlier. In my mind I saw the difference between the two things because of that night. Now when you ask me what the main event is at a Mania I say its HBK vs Undertaker II and not Cena vs Batista for titles, or i say its Daniel Bryan winning the title at Mania 30...honestly its no longer main event status if you go on last.
