what trades in sports that almost went through were you surprised to hear about. for me it was that david wright was almost traded to the blue jays in 2002. At the time David was in the sal and jose cruz was on the blue jays. the mets gm at the time steve phillips reached out to j.p. ricciardi and tried to make a trade. ricciardi did not want to saying that he did not want to trade a major leaguer for some guy in the sally league.
wright would be called up to the mets in 2004 and be an all star for the mets and jose cruz jr. faded into obscurity.

- Scottie Pippen to the Sonics for Shawn Kemp
- Kyle Lowry to the Knicks for Metta World Peace and a first
But the most bonkers by far (and this is according to former Lightning GM Brian Lawton:) Vincent Lecavalier to the Habs for Carey Price, PK Subban and Max Pacioretty.

Just imagine a Tampa Bay Lighting team with Stamkos, Price, Subban, Hedman, St. Louis, and Pacioretty. And imagine a Montreal team with Scott Gomez and Lecavlier.

Barry Larkin to the Mets for Alex Escobar, Jason Saenz and Eric Cammack. Larkin nixed the deal and the Mets got Mike Bordick and used Melvin Mora to get him

Chris Paul almost getting sent from the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) to the Lakers for Pau Gasol et al before the NBA (New Orleans's owners) stepped in. Still trying to figure out if their eventual haul (the Perpetually Injured Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu and the first-rounder that became Austin Rivers) was better. Or if it helped. I mean, it helped them suck hard enough to get Anthony Davis.

Manny Ramirez to Mets for Lastings Milledge + Yusmeiro Petit Manny Ramirez to Marlins for Giancarlo Stanton Manny Ramirez + Jon Lester to Rangers for Alex Rodriguez Andy Pettitte to Angels for Mark Langston Chris Paul almost getting sent from the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) to the Lakers for Pau Gasol et al before the NBA (New Orleans's owners) stepped in. The Lakers deal would have given them a bunch of old declining players on big contracts. (Pau would have gone to Houston) They wouldn't have been good enough to contend yet not bad enough to get a high pick. At least the Clippers deal gave them young players with upside.

Ronaldinho almost going on loan to St Mirren in 2001. He was actually about to be picked up by Estrela da Amadora in Portugal but they didn't saw anything in him in 99/2000

Kaman's best days were definitely behind him, but he was on the edge of servicable. Teams have gotten less for superstars. Reminds me of the Carmelo Anthony deal. Gallo and Gordon both looked like they could have taken the next step and been the next Peja. Not to be...

Ronaldinho almost going on loan to St Mirren in 2001. Blackburn really don't have much luck when it comes to missing out on world class talent. You can add Robert Lewandowski to that list -

Another Pip one was him almost going to the Celtics in 1997 for a draft pick the Bulls would've used to select Tracy McGrady

In 1995 Detroit nearly traded Yzerman to Ottawa for Yashin. Also in 2007 Detroit nearly traded Datsyuk for Scott Gomez.

The Cardinals were going to trade Stan Musial to the Phillies for Robin Roberts but Musial said he would retire if the trade happened.
The Yankees and Red Sox had verbally agreed to trade Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio but changed there mind at the last minute.

Carlos Gomez back to the Mets for Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores. Of course, the trade was nixed at the last second and the Mets ended up getting some Cespedes guy.
