I always like to check out how Meltzer rated matches after I've watched an event. After watching the abysmal WWF Wrestling Classic from 1985, I noticed that he rated 8 of the matches at 3 stars or above. I know it's all subjective, but I couldn't believe that he gave over half the card such high ratings when most of the matches were about two minutes long and virtually all of them have awful finishes. Yet I was staggered that he rated them so highly. So are there any events or matches where you just don't see eye to eye with Meltzer and his star ratings? For quick reference his star ratings can be found here link

Wrestle Kingdom 10. Tanahashi vs Okada.
He gave that match the full ***** and I just can't see why. It pales in comparison to all of their other matches and wasn't even the best match on the show in my view. I've found myself starting to disagree with Dave a lot more lately, honestly.

In relation to old events like the Wrestling Classic mentioned, you've got to keep in mind that he rated these matches when they happened. When he (or anyone else) might give a match 3 stars in the middle of the 80s, you have to factor in that it wasn't during an era when you could see 20+ minute great matches on television on a regular basis, or watch virtually everything from all of wrestling history on demand for $9.99 a month. At the time, it was something he liked out of what was available to watch. In comparison to today's wrestling, and how much great stuff is available to watch whenever we want to, yeah, it doesn't hold up.

Isn't there a conspiracy theory that Meltzer adds extra stars purely if there is anyone Japanese competing in the match?

He definitely favours Japanese wrestlers and matches that take place in the Tokyo Dome.

I don't think I have ever agreed with his ratings except once.

I think the idea of giving a match a star rating is fine, but its weird to think there's any real way to rate it outside of your own personal enjoyment factor. You can break that down a bit I guess, but it remains your own personal feelings on whatever specific qualities you choose to rate it on. Basically, who cares.

While I've found myself not agreeing with a few of his ratings, I must admit that I've really enjoyed the majority of the matches that he's given the whole 5 stars to. But it really just comes down to personal preference.

This is what Meltzer said on JR podcast, that his star ratings wasn't the absolute end in all wrestling and that every people could rated the matches according to their personal feeling. In that sense I started to see some matches as art in the sense that it depends on what kind of emotion emotes on you to qualify them as such

He definitely favours Japanese wrestlers and matches that take place in the Tokyo Dome. Only 2 five-star matches were at the Tokyo Dome, and they were at the past 2 Wrestle Kingdoms. Its just an old joke because of the hard-on Meltzer had for All Japan in the mid-90s.
