Wasn't it mentioned on commentary and in vignettes that Jeff Jarrett was only wrestling in the WWF in order to raise his music profile? Yes. Funny enough Jeff Jarrett's character is perfect for a fighting game.

These early to mid 90's gimmicks are a big part of why I thought wrestling was stupid until a friend showed me ECW in 1996.

Even as a kid who still thought wrestling was real I wondered why these guys felt obligated to wear the garb from their day job into the wrestling ring.

"Meh, just choose a profession and move on"

Seriously, did Duke Droese just show up with a trash can and a garbage man outfit and no one on commentary asked why he was there?

A lot of those gimmicks weren't meant to get over and were just for utility players with a colorful gimmick compared to a bland guy in tights.

They should have done other career choices, too. It would have been interesting to see a grocery store cashier gimmick this makes me long for the day of Wayne the convenience store guy and Trekkie.

Bob Holly did have a legit auto racing career (even during his wrestling career), so that one could be seen as more of an extension of his real life.

When I think 'world class athlete', the first thing that comes to my mind is 'moonlighting plumber'. TL Hopper was the least-threatening-looking 'gimmick' wrestler I can think of. Well he ate a piece of shit from the bottom of a swimming pool. That's pretty damn threatening.
