I think only time will tell how big of a historical upset this is. Arsenal have been in habitial 3rd or 4th for a decade,Man Utd like despite the boatload of cash they can use on players since the retirement of Ferguson may be in for a rollercoaster trainwrecker at the Manager position like Chelsea for some time and while Man City have management stability have a lot of roster issues. If some other unheralded club like WBA,Swansea,Cardiff etc make a run at the league title in the next 2-3 years then this season looks less like anomoly and more like a break point where it proved conventional analysis by fans and experts alike was just wrong and that there is an opening at least in the short teams to make a run.
