Well he has to fight once. Just for the sake of being able to live this endeavor down.

How good of a fighter can you be when your training regimen is being salty on twitter?

This is exactly what I said would happen.
He's 37. His body is broken down. He shouldn't have opened his big mouth about going to UFC, and then he wouldn't have had to get his ass kicked, look like a chump and come crawling back to Vince when he eventually has his first fight.
Or, should I say, if he has his first fight.

Too many people talk the big man and then end up flat out. I would rather keep my mouth shut and not try to prove anything to myself or others. He's not cut out for that world and not many people are.

I literally forgot about CM Punk still trying to fight until I read this thread, it's been more than a year since the announcement, I think people already lost interest.
I think after he saw what Mickey Gail was really about, he realized he made a huge mistake.
If he doesn't fight, then his legacy is tainted in the eyes of the fans, it would be better for him to get his ass kicked than not fighting at all after the stupid press conferences.
When he returns to the wwe, I expect Vince to make a joke about his ufc debut.

Since the UFC kinda lies about the real fight purses I don't really know, but Punk has done appearances for the UFC, and when he was feuding in twitter with Cathal Pendred, he said that made more for appearance than Pendred did in his whole fighting career.
I wonder if the UFC can sue him if he doesn't fight for the money they wasted promoting him.
On another note, I think it's telling that from reading the article, several sources confirmed that Punk got his ass kicked in the sparrings, mind you this guys aren't even signed with the ufc, and in sparrings the fighters tend not to go all in, imagine what Gail would do to him.

When he returns to the wwe, I expect Vince to make a joke about his ufc debut. Even if this UFC adventure tanks, I still don't see Punk back in WWE a long as HHH is around. His cheap-ass lifestyle isn't going to see him run out of money (and I'm sure he was smart enough to get a prenup with AJ), and he's impossibly stubborn. Even if they offered him a Lesnar-like contract (which they won't), I'm certain his pride won't allow him to ever sign it. I fully expect him to fight Gail, get soundly beaten, then retire and start up the baby factory with AJ.

I'm resigned to the fact that this dude will never fight. To try to get into UFC in your mid 30s with no real background. Sure you can say you practiced here and there but a lot of these dudes are blackbelts and in some cases olympic athletes. I would hope his wife talks him out of this craziness. This is coming off like a passion play now because he's so burned out on wrestling he doesn't want to go back.
However, Dana isn't burying him yet so Punk still has some type of wiggle room.

Or, should I say, if he has his first fight. Add all of that together and the fact that, by his own admission, he has no real athletic ability and has to work twice as hard as others to do the same thing, I'm not sure what dude was expecting when he decided to try his hand at MMA this late in the game. I hope he gets that one fight in and gets out without getting seriously hurt. That's about the best possible outcome here.

If the WWE offers him a good enough deal I could see Punk coming back. That said they have no reason to since they're filled to the brim with talent as it is. Punk is also in a position where he really doesn't have to crawl back to WWE. I could see NJPW throwing buckets of cash to nab him even on a limited schedule. Likewise, if he stays in MMA Bellator or Rizin would throw tons of money at him and feed him cans until the end of time because they have no problem promoting freak shows and having can fights, which is an image the UFC at least tries somewhat to avoid. Those are just a few options off the top of my head.

I just never really knew what he was thinking here. Your mid-thirties just isn't a time to start a UFC career. Having self confidence is great, but never let it become self deception.

Or, on the opposite side...especially if it's clear CM Punk is probably never even going to make it to the Kimbo Slice-style "watch him as a borderline freakshow" level of performer and will firmly be "a publicity stunt, no more than Herschel Walker, Batista, or Jose Canseco"...then Dana's expecting Gall to destroy Punk and then use the notoriety of "The guy who beat CM Punk into a bloody pulp" to make Gall a big draw.
