One was before an episode of RAW and the next was the following days Smackdown taping. For the former he was managed by Harley Race and for the latter he was managed by Tony Atlas. f***ing bizarre... www.cagematch.net/?id=2&nr=1213&page=4&s=600

Didn't another NOAH guy get try outs around the same time, i'm thinking Marufuji had a dark match.

Yeah the rumor at the time was he had been hyped to PS Hayes as a Japanese version of Bam Bam Gordy and when Hayes finally saw him, he was unimpressed and actually angered over the comparison. I think had that comparison not been made to Hayes, he might have gotten a WWE run.

Wasn't he also negotiating a new deal with NOAH?

Morishima did the dark matches with NOAH's approval. He was working with ROH at the time and NOAH called WWE seeking a tryout for him. WWE did have interest with him but balked signing him after the conditions NOAH wanted. They would basically lease Morishima to WWE for 2 years which he would return back home.

And they never signed him? I always thought the rumor was that they WANTED to sign him, but the negotiations fell through because his people wanted some stupid bullshit like for him to win the World title and never lose a match.

A big fat agile hoss who stiffs the shit out of people SHOULD be a top contender and rarely lose.

I was there for one of them. From what I remember, 90 percent of the crowd had no idea who he was. The other 10 percent (including myself) went insane. He beat Charlie Haas who wore a bunch of different masks I believe. Jack Swagger also worked a dark match that night under his real name if I am not mistaken.

I was there at one of his matches too: it was in Chicago, before the episode of RAW.
He actually built up a pretty decent reaction. Most of the crowd was silent when he started, since they had no idea who he was, but by the end, a pretty decent "Morishima" chant had broken out.

I get the joke but Yang actually would be a good opponent in a try out for someone like Shiozaki. Yang wrestled in Japan for several years.
