I think this is more of a situation facing all cable stations due to cord cutters. Every cable package I have had, and before that my parents had came with ESPN. It is not like HBO or Showtime where you can choose to subscribe or not.

Yeah, ESPN isn't facing a crisis of lack of customers per se. They just face the problem of having paid so much for rights deals thinking they'd always have cable money and now there's a paradigm shift. I have Vue, I know a lot of people have Sling, others still have streams from less legal sources. But in the long term, there's going to be a smaller piece of a smaller pie. ESPN is still a big deal to the sports segment of customers, and not having them is a dealbreaker to a lot of people. So they have some clout left.

I was just reading an article on this, and apparently ESPN has committed 7.3 billion dollars next year to various sports league, etc. So a smaller piece of a smaller pie might eventually put them well into the red. They are too big to fail, but man, their short-sightedness and the ease with which they spent billions and billions of dollars is going to hurt them so damn much. This year really is just the tip of the iceberg.

That show had the perfect mix of personality.

Maybe they can put JBL on Mike and Mike and add Austin Aries as the Smackdown Heel

ESPN is just throwing shit at a wall now. Screamin A Smiff and Max Kellerman on First Take and moving it to ESPN where also no one watches it. Now breaking up one of their well drawing shows for a show that will probably eventually fail. Greenberg was always good by himself, but not really great. His chemistry with Golic is what made them both better. It's like breaking up a good tag team for a singles push for a guy no one is dying to see independently.

I had no idea Greenberg is making $6 mil per year just to host a radio show. That is great money, but apparently the raise came with the caveat of getting his own show. The tag team description is on point, this show probably has a 95% chance of failing. No one out there is clamoring for a Mike Greenberg led show, so if and when it fails...has the ship sailed on him going back to Mike and Mike at that point?

Proof that Skip Bayless was the x-factor. lol

I hate to see Mike and Mike break up, and Greeny throwing Golic through the barber shop window seemed unnecessary.

Sports Reporters was an institution in the 90's, but as the discussion has changed from thoughtful to controversy 24/7 news cycle BS, the show seems like a forgotten relic. It's a shame too, because that is more like the programs that ESPN should shift to. But it is a little too stuffy and worshiping at the altar of sports. Time slot is terrible, too. Basically, I forgot it even existed and if it wasn't dead today, it would be tomorrow.

After John Saunders' death, I didn't think the show had much longer. Mike Lupica isn't even close to being on Saunders' level. And he's no Dick Schaap either.
Still sad to see it go, though.

No idea if the new 6 PM Sportscenter Format will stick. I think once you make your bed with stuff like this, you gotta see it through regardless if it fails or not. Anything else will just be seen as a step down. I'm just not sure how I feel with the trend of moving towards character centric shows rather than just giving us the news.
