Gypsy Joe has Died at the age of 82. He has been around for years and was the oldest active pro wrestler. He had been in bad health for a few years now. He is probably best known for his altercation with New Jack at an indy show in 2003.

I got to see Joe at a local indy back in the early 90's. Tons of toughness with a bit of personality. A one of a kind man. RIP

I saw the news from Ricky Morton. I knew he had been in a nursing home several years ago, and was apparently expressing doubts that anyone really remembered him. I hope that he was reassured in that regard.
I think I have a signed picture of him around here somewhere, he was at one of the Fanfest shows, I think in 2011.

As Maffew put it, Grim Reaper probably needed a SWAT team to help him out.

Apart from the new jack incident, I remember him for working in all Japan in a tag match against Giant Baba. Gypsy Joe didn't sell anything for baba's offense, he wasn't booked again for all japan.

One of the weirdest long careers in wrestling history, it goes without saying.

Wasn't he extremely racist and that's why New Jack stabbed him?

Wasn't he extremely racist and that's why New Jack stabbed him? No, it was because he started shoot punching and head butting new jack in their match. I watched other matches from him, one against Giant Baba and Taz, and the guy pretty much hit them for real and didn't sell anything.

The fact at almost 70 New Jack borderline commuted felony assault on him and he still calmly walked away shows he was a tough dude

I remember him wrestling under a mask as El Grande Pistolero in the GWF and the USWA. I didn't know it was him until Taz mentioned him at one of those ECW Cyberslam Q and As they held for fans back in the day. Taz said he was the toughest wrestler he'd ever faced. He put him over huge. The fans were surprised but they recognized him as El Grande Pistolero too. Probably due to him having some matches on ESPN a few years before. That comment by Taz was really what got Gypsy Joe's name floating around for people that weren't aware of him back then. I also remember New Jack mentioning that Taz put him over as being the toughest wrestler in one of his shoots and saying he was nothing. I've wondered if New Jack went after him for that reason. I guess it made him feel like a tough guy to go after Joe since he was in his 70s at the time. What was that going to accomplish? You beat up an old man and you look like a loser. You get beat up by an old man and you look like a loser. You lose either way. Joe took it and walked off so that's pretty tough to me. RIP Gypsy Joe.

It's not like Jack exploded over nothing, Gypsy Joe started attacking him for real, punching him in the eye full force, I'm not excusing what Jack did, but keep in mind that Gypsy Joe has a history of shoot punching people, and not in a stiff way, he went beyond that. Watch the video, the whole match is on youtbue, Gypsy Joe started shooting on New Jack before he ever laid a hand on him.

It's incredible to think that he was still working crazy hardcore matches in his seventies, a true testament to his toughness. I never saw him work apart from the infamous New Jack encounter, and hadn't realised he was as prolific as he had been. My most prevalent memory of him was of a hilarious story from the Dynamite Kid's autobiography about going to McDonald's in Tokyo with Gypsy Joe, who offered to order for him claiming he could speak fluent Japanese, only for him to turn to the cashier and order "two Big Mac-O, and one Filet-O-Fish-O".

Ha, so he wasn't just being a dick to New Jack. According to his Wikipedia, Gypsy Joe was trained by Carlos Colon...I wonder if he taught him how to sell and actually throw work punches
