Legitimately: having a job that pays well, but makes you miserable or being happy at a job that allows you just to get by?
Just asking.

Honestly, if I was getting by and happy I'd have everything I'd want in life. Being miserable, money or not, is not a good way to live.

Happiness is the superior currency.
Your job can't suck. If what you do for money makes you unhappy, your house and new car ultimately don't matter. Long term, you need something you can at least shake off daily and don't disbelieve in.

Long-term, it's got to be happiness, but there's something to be said for gutting it out for a year or two in a lousy job that fills up your savings account.

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

well i had a job that, due to having no bills to pay (military living in the barracks), paid well but i was f***ing miserable. it seriously sucked so bad that it got to that every single saturday afternoon a wave of anxiety would roll over me because i knew the next day was sunday, which made the day after that monday. i was literally getting depressed on my day off because of knowing i'd have to go back to work.
i'd take the happy but scrapping by job in a heartbeat over that shit again

Key word is pays you enough to get by.
I'm unhappy at my job AND not making enough to get by without help from parents.

I'd rather be happy at a job that just gets me by.

I absolutely despise my f***ing job, but I can't find anything that pays anything close to it in the stagnant job market right now, so I'm stuck with it.
EDIT: I could get by making less money, own my house and car free and clear, but I like having the money to do whatever the f*** I want so I put up with this job despite the fact that I'm sure it's taking time off my life due to how it f***s with my anxiety issues so badly.

The reason one might want money is to lead a more comfortable and /or luxurious life because it makes them happy, so having money but not doing anything that makes you happy with it beats the point of having it in the first place, doesn't it? I'd much rather have a lower-paying job that leaves me satisfied. Hell, being rich yet miserable is one of the most pathetic things I can think of, just look at Martin Shkreli. Long-term, it's got to be happiness, but there's something to be said for gutting it out for a year or two in a lousy job that fills up your savings account. Fair point. With this sort of question, I assume we're not talking short-term, though.

Depends whether you're happy just getting by, and if the answer is no, whether getting paid better would change that.

I've turned down multiple promotions at my current job because while there is an uptick in pay, everyone who moves upbis miserable and overworked. I've literally had the person two steps away from pretty much the top boss try to get me to move up and I had to give a vague noncommital response.
In most companies if they're paying you more for a new position, they're gonna work your ass five times harder as a result.
If you love your job and want to advance, that's great, but I make enough to get by and have a lil extra for funzies and my dept is super laid back. I just wanna get paid and go home where I can do the stuff I love without being exhausted or pissed off from my dayjob.
