I'm planning a trip to Australia over Christmas and the New Year (for some warm weather & cricket), but I confess I have a bit of a phobia of spiders. I couldn't help but notice that Australia has a bit of a reputation for being home to huge spiders and other venomous death bringing fauna. So my question is, what are the chances that I will come face to face with a killer black widow, or a venomous snake during my travels across the country, or does it vary depending on the location? (we're thinking of Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and possibly Brisbane) Do I have to check the bed every night, check behind the toilet and empty my shoes and check my clothes every morning just in case anything has crawled in there, or is this just an exaggeration of life in Australia? Thanks in advance, hope I don't come across as ignorant or stupid by asking these questions

Also, have you ever held a koala and what is the best place to hold a koala?
So far my money is on Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.

Are you just given a Kangaroo at birth or do you have to battle to the death with one to claim it?

I have lived in the Melbourne area for most of my life. And I can say, well in the urban and suburban areas anyway that there is barely any dangerous spiders around here. The most venomous is the Redback Spider (the most metal spider, see the pics in the Wiki below ) and you rarely see them as well.. Might have seen about 5 in the thirty or so years I have been here. And there have been no reported human fatalities from one their bites.. well ever. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redback_spiderSnakes though, you have to look out for them. But they mostly hang out in bushy areas like national parks and arboretums. You won't find them on the airport luggage carousel... anymore The only native animal attack I have experienced is from birds. Seriously been swooped by Australian Magpies, and Masked Lapwings (aka Masked Plovers aka those noisey f***ers!).. But they only do that during late winter/early spring while they protect their nests. Rest of the year they are pretty docile.

Also, watch out for Drop Bears. If you're in Australia and haven't been mauled by a Drop Bear, then you're not really in Australia.

I'm from the suburbs in Melbourne and I've had at least 100 snakes jump out of my sink drain throughout my life and at least 5 crocodiles have popped out of my toilet.
I have also woken up with spiders in my mouth every morning.

As a Canadian, how many times have you had Beavers come outof your drain, Wolverines out of your toilet and woken up with Moose in your mouth?

Are you just given a Kangaroo at birth or do you have to battle to the death with one to claim it? No no, you kill the Kangaroo's master and then he'll join your party when you use a continue. There might also be a code you enter at the title screen.

Now as for the real issue Look we have the Cthulhu situation under control, he has his part of the city and we have ours.

For snakes and spiders, unless you're planning on spending a lot of time around the deep bush lands, chances are the worst you'll likely come across are Huntsman Spiders. They can look scary but are timid as hell, and not dangerous at all.
Drop Bears on the other hand are a serious safety concern here. Just be careful when walking around tall trees. I get that the tourism board likes to play them off as a hoax to encourage visitors, but it's ridiculous that they expect to put the lives of these people at risk by patronizing such a danger.

Don't worry, I'll make sure I pack 50 bottles of vegemite to spread all over my body and cover myself in my own piss every day to deter these vicious critters

I like Kangaroo meat. It's a bit strong, but beefy enough.
