Chicago is looking pretty good right now compared to Rio's insanity. Detroit is looking pretty good right now compared to Rio's insanity.

Overspending in totalitarian countries. Gee, I wonder how that ends up. Never seen that before. Except in 1936. But WAIT! It gets BETTER! The situation over the cost of the Games has gotten so bad that even cities that might weather the cost well (Munich, Oslo) opted to withdraw rather than bid for the 2022 Winter Games. That left the race between Almaty, Kazakstan and the eventual winner... Wait for it... Wait for it... BEIJING! The closest mountains are 150 miles away from the city and its going to be an encore of 2008 all over again! Oh, and by the way, also means the next three Olympics - 2018, 2020, 2022 - will be in Asia. PyeongChang, Korea; Tokyo, Japan; Beijing, China respectively. Two Winters and a Summer. I seriously cannot face palm hard enough. I can deal with Korea and Japan, that's fine. But I just cringe over rewarding the Chinese for bad behavior with another Games. But to be fair, the IOC created the situation themselves, they have no one else to blame for it. Sorry, been a while since I've had an Olympics forum to discuss and I got a metric ton I gotta get off my chest. When I first PyeongChang, I read it as Pyongyang. Yeah, if they wanna top this fiasco, going to North Korea would certainly do it. Not that going to South Korea will be a good idea since being in such close proximity to North Korea could cause a plethora of issues. At least you'd be guaranteed to get good crowds in North Korea.

The 1988 Summer Games were in Seoul, Korea and North Korea did boycott but the Games went on. PyeongChang is 60 miles east of Seoul, still close to the border. Remember, PC was awarded the games five years ago, before North Korea started ratcheting up the tension. Fair to say both PC and Tokyo are under tension due to North Korea, but I guess the IOC is expecting things to pass.

I'm tuning in for this just in case something goes horrifically wrong in the middle of it, which wouldn't surprise me.
Edit: It's telling how even zoomed out you can see some pretty big chunks of empty seats.

The opening ceremony has been fun so far. But you can tell they did not have nearly the same budget as London or Beijing .. I mean at one point a supermodel walked from one end of the stadium to the other.
But they are doing the best they can

Curious where people are seeing anything at all of the actual ceremony, because I'm just seeing a bunch of in-studio crap of talking heads rambling on and on and on and on about nothing.

What's it like not having some engaging conversation as, "I know he plays golf and basketball, but if he were an Olympian what sport do you think Obama would play?" "Well, I think he'd play golf or basketball!"?

NBC is on delay, we haven't even started yet!
And to answer the other question, the budget for the opening ceremony is about a quarter of London.
