He's the Tunney-esque authority figure we've all wanted, not biased towards either heel or face and he doesnt get involved in storylines. He's just the commissioner and does a fine job as it.

Sometimes I do wish he can still go in the ring for the novelty of a Joe vs Regal or something along those lines when the heel steps out of line and attacks him
Love him in his role tho. Give no f****, either you like it or you don't mentality of a person in the GM role.

I'm biased due to my longterm raving fandom for the man, but I think you can slot Regal into absolutely any role and he will be phenomenal in it. Superb wrestler, promo, I really enjoyed his commentary style, he was a brilliant heel GM on Raw, he's killing it on NXT, I guarantee he could do face GM too.
I want him on WWE television proper because I don't have the Network so am limited to clips & highlights atm, I'd love Regal as SD GM, or Raw GM to counter Stephanie.

Regal just oozes "you will respect this man".
It fits perfectly when a guy like Baron Corbin throws a shirt at him, and the crowd goes "ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh" because Regal is a guy that commands respect, and doesn't need a 20 minute promo to get his point across.
Arrive. Speak succinctly. Leave.

Regal is rapidly becoming my favourite authority figure of all time.
Okay, third behind Commissioner Foley and Raw GM Bischoff, but he's up there! He'll probably overtake Eric the way he's going.

Dude's had three runs as an authority figure and managed to make each one unique. First he had his Commissioner run in 2001, which had a largely comedic slant by being a McMahon puppet and then his interactions with Tajiri. Then he had the RAW General Manager run in 2007-2008, which was mostly unmemorable until he won King Of The Ring and went utterly mad with power, taking things off the bloody air and such. He was THIS close to being a world champion. Finally, he's had this run in NXT where he's played it completely neutral, but being such a breath of fresh air in an age of authority weight-throwing.

I loved how straightforward the Segment with Bayley was.
Bayley:I want a title rematch with Asuka. Regal:/Genuine shock/What a great idea I'll ask Asuka and if she agrees I'll draw up the paperwork. Bayley:Okay!/They shake hands/ *End of Segment*
I've been a big fan of Regal since he started slapping Jeeves because Jeeves deserved to be slapped.

I was half holding out hope he'd be one of the General Managers of RAW or SmackDown, but I'm quite glad he wasn't as he suits NXT perfectly.
Though I also loved him on commentary.
And I loved when he got back in the ring to face Ambrose and Kassius Ohno.
Basically I love Regal.

He was great in the last days of FCW whilst commentating as well, which all seem like a fever dream now.

The last three words of your thread title are redundant.

He's a commissioner that's actually willing to do what's "best for business", and not just as a tagline. It's why LU's Dario Cueto, despite being a heel, works in the same regard. They might have moments where their characters lean towards stacking the odds against a face or giving a heel their comeuppance, but their overall goal, the thing that drives their decisions, is to give the audience something awesome that they'll believe was worth their money. Cueto does it more for the money and wealth than any connection with the wrestlers unlike Regal, but it still works. Their main goal is to put on an awesome product first, and if they can deal with petty personal bullshit in the process, that's fine. But the latter doesn't get in the way of the former, unlike on the main rosters where the latter CONSTANTLY gets in the way of the former.

Eventually Foley is bound to disagree with management and leave (he always does), once this happens hopefully Regal will become Raw's authority figure
