Wasted in the sense of the film basically under-utilizing them or just not giving them enough chance to show off why they're good actors.
Biggest recent example I can think of is Christoph Waltz in Spectre; it just honestly didn't seem like they gave him enough to do or really enough to chew on. Inglourious Basterds showed that he's the master of one act play-ish dialogues, but I barely remember Spectre giving him much one on one time at all.
Another recent example I can think of is Idris Elba in Star Trek Beyond; without getting too spoilery since it's still new, I really kind of dislike any time you put a good actor inside a relatively restrictive facial prosthetic, particularly when they're playing the villain (see also: Willem DaFoe Green Goblin).

John Hurt in 'Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skulls'
So they have a great classic actor with one of the most recognizable imposing voices.. And they pretty much mute him for most of the movie.

I thought he had potential to be the next big action star when I went back and watched The Mummy a couple months ago. And he also had comedic chops and could draw genuine sympathy in stuff like George of the Jungle and Bedazzled. It was kind of lame that he wound up in "Funny action dad roles". There was a time where he was almost Superman.

James Bond and Star Trek films have never been showcases for acting. You could put Daniel Day Lewis or Meryl Streep in some of these roles and if they get anything to do at all except move along plot points.

Leads don't usually have 'AND' before their name on the film's poster and opening credits. But yeah, the trailer was misleading though.

When I was a kid Encino Man was my favorite movie and to this day Ihave an undying love for Pauly Shore and Brendan Fraser. I wish He would have smartened up and skipped the Third Mummy movie, and not been so loyal to the director of Journey and just did the sequel. He has a great catalog though and a career not to be ashamed of. I just wish he would make some type of come back even in Sharknado 5 or Piranha or something.

Brandon Fraser really needs a good comeback role. Something in a Tarantino or Cohen brothers movie perhaps.
