Don't forget Juliette Binoche and David Straithairn! Also Godzilla I'll say Brendan Fraser. I thought he had potential to be the next big action star when I went back and watched The Mummy a couple months ago. And he also had comedic chops and could draw genuine sympathy in stuff like George of the Jungle and Bedazzled. It was kind of lame that he wound up in "Funny action dad roles". There was a time where he was almost Superman. For prime Brendan Fraser check out The Passion of Darkly Noon. The guy definitely can act just chooses not to i guess.

Wasted in the sense of the film basically under-utilizing them or just not giving them enough chance to show off why they're good actors. Biggest recent example I can think of is Christoph Waltz in Spectre; it just honestly didn't seem like they gave him enough to do or really enough to chew on. Inglourious Basterds showed that he's the master of one act play-ish dialogues, but I barely remember Spectre giving him much one on one time at all. Another recent example I can think of is Idris Elba in Star Trek Beyond; without getting too spoilery since it's still new, I really kind of dislike any time you put a good actor inside a relatively restrictive facial prosthetic, particularly when they're playing the villain (see also: Willem DaFoe Green Goblin). Christoph Waltz gets this a lot, in my opinion. I disliked Inglorious Basterds, so I thought he was the only bright spot in the whole movie and it was a waste of his talent (Django Unchained, on the other hand, I felt was a solid movie that used him well). And Spectre...on top of the "it's totally not Blofeld!" non-swerve, he was at the center of the absolute dumbest plot twist in any James Bond movie ever.

Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck in Batman vs Superman; two great actors who are really good at playing the characters they were cast as being given nothing to work with by an insane goober of a director.

Donal Logue in Gotham. I get he's not the star, but you'd think they'd have more for him to do than be a background character for episodes at a time who sometimes gets as little as only couple of lines.

Jeremy Renner in the MCU. He's a two time Oscar nominee playing one of the most charismatic and beloved Avengers of all time, and they opted to drain the character of his personality to the point that casual audiences now think Hawkeye sucks. He could have done so much more. Hopefully still can. Loved him in Civil War.

The casting throughout all the movies is generally excellent, but while many of these characters get to shine in the comics, getting their own stories and series, most of them will never be more than supporting characters in the movies.

I don't think there's a worse case than Hawkeye. Iron Man, Cap, and Thor clearly get to shine. So does Hulk. Black Widow gets a ton of spotlight and she's never been an essential Avenger in the books. Hawkeye is the heart of the team in the books, and the movies have made him a B player. It's pretty terribly handled.

Wheadon didn't seem to understand the character and decided to go with an utlimates route of giving him a family which wasn't set up at all in the first movie mostly it seemed to get people to stop wanting him with Widow and to shuffle him off to the side. The Russos seemed to understand him a bit better and I wish they could have had him from the beginning.

TV rather than movies but: Neighbours had an unknown Margot Robbie and even back then you could tell she was destined for great things. However the soap decided to focus on the worst actress I've ever seen instead of her. Just so you know I'm not exaggerating this was her reaction to a miscarriage. youtu.be/WlXYa_LCJ7EPhillip Winchester did his own crazy stunts on Strikeback which included jumping between moving vehicles without any safety equipment. So naturally I couldn't wait to see what he'd do in 24 up against Jack Bauer. He proceeded to stay in a meeting room the whole series.

I suspect that Jack Nicholson is pretty much always wasted. I hear he loves to get his drink on.
Come on, we're two pages in and I'm the first to do a wasted = drunk joke?

Robert Carlyle in The World Is Not Enough.
A fantastic gritty actor is wasted as a gimmicky henchman playing second fiddle to Sophie Marceau.

Thought she was a bright spot in a gritty series. But nope they just horribly murder her character off screen.

Strange Pick: The girl from Fifty Shades of Grey. The movie's a mess cause the script's a mess cause the book's a mess. But I thought she was trying throughout the film. It was like what Bella Should have been in Twilight. Unfortunately the dude just sucked and gave her nothing to work with.
