I was going to blow up the planet and take over space, but then I learned how to pull guard and life changed.

I do think that mma training could be an outlet for some people. I also feel that you could say the same thing about many other activities. That said, it wouldn't work for all people and potential mass murderers could very well have mental problems that trigger violence which no physical outlet could help to temper.

I always figured MMA was a more organized combat sport than say boxing. I think there's been maybe only a handful of deaths in MMA since it's rise in popularity in the early 90's compared to boxing or even pro wrestling.
But to people not educated in the sport, they see it as human cock fighting, which is far from the truth.

I mean, I get what's she trying to say. I'm sure more than a few fighters turned to the sport because it served as an outlet for them dealing with RL problems.

My personal belief, and something I will talk about any chance I get, is pretty much everyone should be involved in one martial art or another. I think way, way too many people in our society lack humility, self-respect, and discipline, and for my money there are few things better for instilling those things within you than training.

I disagree. Jobs tend to kind of lure the exact people who shouldn't have that power. Not always, but a lot of the time, yeah.
I get it, you like punching people in the face and beating them, do it at the bar, it's a crime, do it in a cage on PPV and it's your job. I get all that, but let's not pretend you just don't like punching people in the face. Dressing it up doesn't make it more noble.

I've seen way too many gory altercations happen in the early mornings on weekends when these amateur mma wankers have decided to have their ex tempore sparring sessions after a night out to agree with that opinion completely. Obviously if you was serious about the competition, then it'd be a completely different gig and the argument of controlled combat would be valid, but as stated above, these kinda things tend to lure wrong kinda people.

Yeah, kind of choosing to believe she's exaggerating for effect on that. Lots of people take up things like boxing or other combat training as an outlet to let aggression out, to work out frustrations, etc., but there's some not so great implications if the idea is that people need violence lest they become mass murderers.

The basic premise of her argument is sound, Ronda's just not really articulate enough to be nuanced about it.

I mean, I get what's she trying to say. I'm sure more than a few fighters turned to the sport because it served as an outlet for them dealing with RL problems. You get that with pretty much any combat sport. Some find it therapeutic, others it's makes worse. A guy I know got thrown off the police service for repeated excessive force, so opened a gym and took up MMA as an outlet for his aggression. Of course, he fell into the "makes them worse" category - in that time he has twice narrowly avoided prison for assaulting a security guard and later breaking the jaw of a referee while serving as timekeeper in a chessboxing match.

The Diaz brothers are a perfect example of MMA mostly keeping them out of trouble. By their own admission they'd most likely be in jail if it weren't for MMA. At the end of the day it depends on the person and what kind of history/mental issues they might have.

The post title - which I presume comes from a news article somewhere - is severely misleading to what she actually says. What she says is something I absolutely agree with.
The thread title though? MMA is absolutely violence for the sake of violence. We're not going to slip into another global recession if UFC isn't on.

I like where she's coming from. A friend of mine became a MMA fighter after getting out of jail. He does it to try and keep out of trouble and if not for MMA, he would probably have gone right back to jail not long after.
