The wrestler Steve Lewington made me think of this thread. He had the gimmick of DJ Gabriel back in WWECW in 2008/2009. They paired him up with Alicia Fox who did some cheesy dancing and he was supposed to be able to dance but he sucked at it.

Charles Wright as Kama, any illusion of him being a serious shoot wrestler/fighter was shattered the moment he stepped foot in the ring and wrestled like he always does. The guy couldn't pass for a Supreme fighting machine even if they booked him in a Wrestlemania match against Diana Ross.

I was thinking about this while watching Nitro the other day: Mortis.
The whole WCW Mortal Kombat Guys angle was dead from the start because of the nWo, so that probably had something to do with it, but Mortis's in-ring wrestling didn't match his character at all. He comes out, he's got a cool, scary skeleton mask and a spooky staff, he's managed by a guy who looks like Satan, his entrance is crazy Halloween organs and red lights...you'd expect the guy to wrestle as that character, right? Like a 1991 Undertaker or something.
Nope. When the bell rings, he wrestles like Kanyon. Kanyon's a great wrestler and everything, but I think by having just wrestle like a normal dude hindered him right from the start. Just made him a guy in a Halloween costume instead of a monster.

Pretty sure The Shockmaster Gimmick failed the second the pyro went off... His gimmick was to shock the world and I think he more than accomplished that, given that he has created one of wrestling's most replayed and infamous clips. |
