Why isn't it Swagger getting Bob Backlund with a Make Swagger Great Again gimmick? It makes about infinity more sense than Darren Young. No it doesn't. Swagger's always been a loopy meathead. Darren Young is (really trying to find a different word) a straight man for Backlund's wackiness to bounce off of. Swagger/Backlund wouldn't work for the same reason Swagger/Bo wouldn't work and Swagger was fun to watch as said loopy meathead/fratboy athlete dork. I want THAT Swagger back

Young mentioned it about a year before they started appearing on screen together during an interview on talk is Jericho.

My point it, that Swagger wouldn't work with Backlund. You can't stack weirdness on weirdness without foundation. Tell that to New Day. That's entirely different. 1) they exist as one eccentric entity 2) they begin their promos based and grounded as any wrestling promo but then just stack the New Day-isms on top of them 3) Kofi, Big E and Xavier exist with enough pre-established nuance to allow for their weirder moments to be balanced out by their serious undertakings.

Exhibiting your quirks at the right time/knowing when to be "on" and "off" is Entertainment 101. Any performer worth his salt can do that...and Backlund & Swagger are worth their salt. 3. >pre-established nuance Couldn't disagree more. Swagger has had a good amount of characterization himself. He's been a dumb, bucktoothed jock, he's been a racist crony, he's currently not getting a push as an "American hero". Contrast this with Kofi Kingston; New Day is pretty much his first real gimmick with some meat on it.

Backlund-Swagger share too many similarities to have a compelling dynamic. Anything one says or does you could imagine the other doing. Where would you even go with it without being redundant?

Remember the brief where Bob Backlund managed Kurt Angle? That worked, I don't see why Swagger and Backlund couldn't.

There is no dimension where Jack Swagger could cut a promo remotely as intense as Bob Backlund can. Backlund basically sweats bile; even at his most antagonistic, Swagger never came across as unstable, even in a silly way. I mean, if you really need a contrast for the pairing to work (which I don't think you do), that's one right off the bat.

They alternate playing straight-man. Oddly enough, I generally consider Golddust to be the straight man in that duo. And, more oddly, he plays that role well.
