Starship Pain. Even on the 5% of times it actually hit it didn't look even remotely like something that would keep a skinny pre-teen kid down for a three count. The Moonlight Drive was much more effective.

This isn't from WWE, but I just can't buy into Okada's Rainmaker. Even ignoring the fact he doesn't really have the bulk to make it a believable one hit kill move, the arbitrary twirling set up looks ridiculous. It also doesn't help that the move he often uses to lead into it is a tombstone piledriver.

Del Rio's tree of woe corner stomp. Because if the angle you're hitting it at you're not doing any damage. You're better off just doing it while they're on the ground. But this would be countered by his opponents being stupider than Del Rio would be- just because the way that the corner stomp hits, it does so when they're bending upwards and taking the move. Even if he's not doing as much damage from the move, it's trumped by it being a move so basic that his opponent can literally counter it by doing nothing at all and just lying there.

An AA onto concrete or some other hard surface would hurt like hell, especially if it's someone like Cena tossing you down with all his strength.

Jake Roberts perfected the DDT, Bradshaw perfected the clothesline, Michaels perfected the superkick. That's the best way of looking at it.

The RKO, yes it's one of the greatest finishing moves of all time but how can Randy Orton make his opponent's body spread out like they do on his own?

Well iirc Jake was the only dude who did the DDT at the time but now when many wrestlers use it, what makes dirty deeds a match ender?

If I can go a bit "Regal on Commentary" here, the fact he hooks the arms makes it more devastating because they can't protect themselves from the impact. That coupled with the the way he snaps them down at such a high angle means they're just getting spiked on their foreheads, stunning them enough to get a three count.

It all comes down to psychology to me. I feel like Heyman had a GREAT breakdown of this kind of thing on one of his Austin podcast appearances. He used an example Mark Henry, a bear hug (I think it was a bear hug anyway), and HOW to get that over as the most devastating thing ever. I believe it was about a headlock, and he mapped out a year of protecting it and getting someone over breaking it.

Plus, I think, it's part of the suspension of disbelief to an extent.

Somehow taking off an elbow pad and bouncing off two ropes can turn a normal elbow drop into 'the most electrifying move in sports entertainment'

This long in the thread and Big Show's KO Punch hasn't been mentioned? Nah, have you seen the size of the big show's hands? I sure believe a punch from big show would knock out someone.

Maybe, but I've seen matches where other punches Show has done look more forceful than the KO Punch. While it does get sold like death, another one that could fit this would be Orton's punt.

This does remind me of a promo Rey was giving then Big Show interrupted by sticking his fist in front of Rey's face and pretty much blocked it entirely

That's a good way to differ the DDTs. Jake was the master and knows how do it, Arn Anderson would grab lower and drive you in the mat and Dean, well, you described pretty damn good.

Arn's old "Fake a punch & DDT them when they duck" spot (Which Scott Dawson has now inherited) is legit one of my favourite spots ever in wrestling.
