For example JBL and the Clothesline from Hell. When anyone else does it it's a normal mid match move. When JBL does it he legitimately looks like he just knocked someone out cold with it.

Same with Jake Roberts and the DDT. Any other schlub and it's a transition move. Jake hits it and his opponent is dead.

Powerbombs. They look great, but they're so overused that they're just used as filler moves in matches now, and when I see someone use it as a finisher it just doesn't feel the same.

HBK's super kick being stronger than Goldberg's.

The Big Ending. Big E's shoulder is protecting you from slamming the mat with full impact. Hell, Mark Henry beat Ryback once by basically making him execute the move.

The Unprettier. Imagine trying to fight someone in real life with that, hypothetically speaking.

The Overdrive - it looks like a guaranteed way to kill your knee while doing little damage to your opponent.

The Attitude Adjustment. Most guys take harder bumps during the course of the match.
Del Rio's tree of woe corner stomp. Because if the angle you're hitting it at you're not doing any damage. You're better off just doing it while they're on the ground.

See that I can believe, because I can buy JBL as a brawler, and a practicer of knocking someone the f*** out Faarooq on the other hand, that dominator was less of a finisher when dude could kill with the spinebuster

Jeff Hardy's swanton looked beautiful, but the guy rarely seemed to get his opponent with full impact. In terms of actual landings, a plain flipping senton would have hit harder.

Starship Pain. Even on the 5% of times it actually hit it didn't look even remotely like something that would keep a skinny pre-teen kid down for a three count.

It all comes down to psychology to me.
I feel like Heyman had a GREAT breakdown of this kind of thing on one of his Austin podcast appearances. He used an example Mark Henry, a bear hug (I think it was a bear hug anyway), and HOW to get that over as the most devastating thing ever.

However we're in the spot monkey era so nothing is special anymore.

But he falls backward though, so the top of his shoulder is facing away from the opponents sternum when he drops.

In defence of the Clothesline from Hell, it's a near-300lb man running at full speed, swinging his arm at you like a club as hard as he possibly can.
A regular clothesline is usually from a stationary position, or from a short run up.
