Tarantino Robert Rodriguez Tony Scott All 3 have made my favourite films and are the reasons I am the film lover I am and in the case of Tony he directed my favourite movie of all time in True Romance. I love Tony Scott. Ridley always got the plaudits but IMO The Martian was the first great film he'd made since Thelma and Louise (and no, I haven't forgotten about) Gladiator). Tony was always the more slightly risky one in his directing style but seemed more commercial and whilst it wasn't always gold with him when it paid off, it paid off big. Like with Top Gun, Crimson Tide, The Last Boy Scout or indeed, True Romance. And it's so f***ing sad to have to write about him in the past tense.

John Carpenter.
Even his misses have some great qualities to them. Plus, that man is a music machine (I really regret missing him in concert).

Just going to pick the one and not throw a list out there. Jim Jarmusch. Dead Man is my favorite American movie of all time, and in my top three movies regardless of country. Ghost Dog and Night on Earth are not too far behind. Plus, Night on Earth has early 90s Winona Ryder who was the epitome of cool and pretty good looking to boot, haha. Nearly every movie in his filmography speaks to me and moves me on some level because he deals with a lot of themes that are personal to me, like loneliness, iconoclasm, and disparate cultures both clashing and meshing beautifully. Not just that he touches upon them, but he engages them in a way that is relevant to my interests and experiences. Also, while it may be a sticking point for some, I really appreciate his willingness to let every scene breathe and unfold at a languid pace. Definitely not for everyone, and that's fine, but he's my favorite.

In terms of consistency as well as just a vast library of movies, Spielberg is going to be hard to beat. There are maybe a handful of his movies I watched where I didn't like something about them.
Kubrick had some misses and not enough movies overall to really call my favorite.
Woody Allen has a lot of great movies, but a lot of times he's too preachy and did have a string of bad movies in the 90's.
David Lynch had like 3 incredible movies, a couple decent ones, and several I can't defend at all.
Cronenberg has made some pretty weak movies in very recent years.
The Coens have completely sold out and made too much schlock for the last decade. Hail Caesar was the final straw for me.
Tarantino has redeemed himself in recent years, but he still made Death Proof. Also his early stuff is still pretty plagiarized, he should give credit to Jim Jaramush and whoever directed City on Fire.
Scorsese has moments of brilliance but also phones it in a lot of times. He now makes mostly movies that were banking on what made his reputation instead of being a daring filmmaker. He'll never again make an offbeat movie like After Hours.

Some of my favourites Steven Spielberg Martin Scorsese Robert Altman Billy Wilder - as he been mentioned yet, I'd easily list 5-6 of his films amony my favourites of all time. Frank Capra Alfred Hitchcock Sergio Leone Matthew Vaughn is someone who continues to impress me and of course the greatest director of all time...

In agreement with a lot of these, but still needs more David Lynch.
And Tom Ford is becoming a modern wonder too.
Not trying to be a hipster by mentioning a random, but Jane Campion is a feminist superhero behind the camera. Not a prolific mainstream filmmaker, but her body of work is a game-changer in terms of messing with the "male lens."

It's a tie between
Roger Corman & David Lynch
With Lynch he has so far only made one film I don't like,Dune, all the rest I like or love. Even the ones like Inland Empire that after 10 viewings I still have no idea what it is about.
With Corman it is how much he could do with almost no money.

There's a handful of directors that I'll go see anything they put out.
Wes Anderson Quentin Tarantino Coen Brothers Darren Aronofsky David Lynch
I have pretty weak taste in movies in that I haven't seen that many of them compared to most people, but most of what I like is the usual stuff everyone knows is good. I have a hard time expanding my horizons because I like watching the same movies over and over again and trying to fully understand every inch of them.
